Close rate calculator

A close rate calculator shows the share of leads that turn into customers. Divide the number of closed deals by the number of leads worked, then multiply by 100 to get a percentage. A second mode works as a conversion rate calculator: divide conversions by visitors to see the share of visitors who became leads or sales.

Formula

Close rateClose rateThe share of leads worked that become closed deals, such as sold jobs or signed cases. Glossary = closed deals / leads worked

How do you calculate close rate?

Close rate is closed deals divided by leads worked. A closed deal is a lead that became a paying customer or a signed client. A lead worked is a lead your team received and tried to contact during the same period.

Conversion rateConversion rateThe share of leads that turn into the outcome the end client wants, such as a booked appointment, a sold job or a signed case. Glossary uses the same division at an earlier step. Conversions are the visitors who took the action you are measuring, such as submitting a lead form, and visitors are everyone who reached the page. The calculator keeps the two in separate modes so the counts are not mixed.

This page is the tool. For what lead conversion rate means at each stage of the funnel and what affects it on the buyer and seller side, read the lead conversion rate guide.

Example (made-up numbers)

10 closed deals from 100 leads worked: 10 / 100 = 10% close rate.

50 conversions from 1,000 visitors: 50 / 1,000 = 5% conversion rate.

How to use the close rate calculator

  1. Pick Close rate to measure leads that became customers, or Conversion rate to measure visitors that became conversions.
  2. Enter the two counts for the same period and the same source.
  3. Read the percentage as you type. Change either count to see how the rate moves.
  4. Use Copy result to paste the figure into a report, or Clear inputs to start again.

Allow time for leads to close before you count. If leads from the last week of the month are still being worked, counting them as not closed lowers the rate. One way to avoid this is to measure close rate only on leads that are at least as old as your usual sales cycle.

How to read the result

Close rate tells you how much of each lead source your team turns into revenue. It is the input that links what you pay for leads to what they earn. Enter it in the lead value calculator to find what one lead is worth, or in the break-even cost per lead calculator to find the most you can pay per lead.

Compare close rates by source, not as one blended figure. Leads from different sources, filters and states can close at different rates, and a blended rate hides which source is doing the work. Track the source of each lead so you can split the counts.

A change in close rate can come from the leads or from your process. Speed to first contact, the number of follow-up attempts and who handles the lead all affect it, so check your own process before you judge a source.

Common close rate mistakes

  • Counting leads that were never worked. Leads nobody called lower the close rate without saying anything about the source. Count leads worked, and track uncontacted leads separately.
  • Mixing periods. Closed deals from one month divided by leads from another give a rate that never happened.
  • Counting returned leads twice. Decide whether returned leads stay in the lead count and apply the same rule to every source you compare.
  • Using conversion rate and close rate as the same number. A landing page conversion rate measures visitors who became leads. A close rate measures leads who became customers. They answer different questions.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate close rate?

Divide the number of closed deals by the number of leads worked in the same period, then multiply by 100. The calculator above shows the percentage as you type.

What is the difference between close rate and conversion rate?

Close rate measures leads that became customers. Conversion rate measures visitors or contacts that took a specific action, such as submitting a form. Both divide a result by a starting count.

Can I use this as a lead conversion rate calculator?

Yes. Enter the leads that reached the stage you are measuring as conversions and the leads you started with as visitors. The lead conversion rate guide explains each stage.

Should returned leads count in close rate?

Pick one rule and use it for every source. If you also enter a return rate in the break-even cost per lead calculator, count returned leads in leads worked, because that calculator applies the return credit separately.
