IUL leads: indexed universal life leads for agents

IUL leads are requests from consumers who asked for information about indexed universal life insurance and agreed to be contacted. Agents and advisors who sell IUL policies buy them. As a lead type, an IUL lead is a permanent life insurance lead with a named product interest, and it usually leads to a scheduled appointment, not a quick phone quote.

Summit Leads is now onboarding buyers and suppliers for life insurance, final expense, IUL and mortgage protection leads. Email us with the lines, states and daily volume you want.

This page treats IUL leads strictly as a lead type: who buys them, what an IUL lead commonly includes, what makes a good one, what drives the cost, and which kinds of vendors sell them. It does not describe how IUL policies work or who they suit.

What IUL leads are and who buys them

IUL stands for indexed universal life, a type of permanent life insurance. An IUL lead is created when a consumer selects IUL on a life form, or asks for information about it, and consents to be contacted. The lead tells the buyer that the conversation should start with this product, not with a general life quote.

IUL insurance leads are bought by a narrower group than term life leads:

Common buyers of IUL leads
Buyer typeHow it uses IUL leads
Independent agentWorks IUL leads with the carriers it is appointed with, usually by appointment.
Advisor who also sells life insuranceBooks meetings from IUL leads as part of a wider client conversation.
Agency team focused on permanent lifeAssigns IUL leads to agents trained on the product and the paperwork.
Captive agentBuys IUL leads only if its carrier offers an IUL product, and filters to that carrier's states.

High-volume call centers buy IUL leads less often than term or final expense leads, because the sale usually needs a longer meeting and more documents.

How IUL leads differ from other life insurance leads

Because the buyer pool is smaller and the sale is longer, an IUL lead is usually worked by one agent over several weeks. For the wider set of life lead types, see life insurance leads.

What an IUL lead commonly includes

Fields depend on the form and the seller. In the industry, an indexed universal life lead commonly includes:

  • Name, phone, email and state
  • Date of birth or age range
  • The product selected on the form (IUL) and how the question was worded
  • Coverage amount range or a monthly budget range
  • Tobacco use and sometimes a few health questions
  • Whether the person already has life coverage
  • Preferred meeting type: phone, video or in person, and a preferred time
  • Sometimes a household income band
  • The consent record: consent language, timestamp, IP address and page URL

Ask the seller for the exact wording of the product question. "Interested in IUL" picked from a list of products is a stronger signal than an IUL tag added to a general life form by the seller. Which fields you receive is agreed with the seller.

What makes a good IUL lead?

A good IUL lead is a reachable person who chose IUL on an accurate form, gave consent that covers your agency, and fits the ages and states your carriers write. Use this checklist on any source:

  • The consumer chose the product. IUL was selected on the form, not assigned later.
  • The ad and landing page were accurate. Ask to see the creative. Pages that make product promises bring in leads with the wrong expectations, and those leads tend to cancel meetings or complain.
  • The answers fit your carriers. Age, state and health answers fall inside what your carriers accept.
  • The contact details work. Phone and email pass validation before delivery. See lead validation.
  • Consent covers your agency. The consent language names or clearly describes the buyer. See express written consent.
  • The lead is recent, or its age is stated. A request from last week and one from last year need different approaches.
  • You know how often it was sold. An IUL lead sold to several agents leads to several meeting requests for one consumer.

The second point matters more for IUL than for most lead types. Product claims in IUL marketing draw scrutiny, so check with your own compliance team before you use any seller's materials in your follow-up.

How much do IUL leads cost?

IUL lead prices vary by seller and by order. This page does not quote prices. These factors set the price of an IUL lead:

Factors that affect the cost of IUL leads
FactorHow it moves the price
Real-time or agedReal-time leads cost more than aged leads of the same type.
Exclusive or sharedA lead sold to one buyer costs more than a lead sold to several.
Form depthMore qualifying questions mean fewer leads per ad dollar spent, which raises the price per lead.
Traffic sourceThe cost of the ads that bring people to the form passes into the lead price.
FiltersNarrow age, state or income filters reduce the supply that matches your order.
Demand at the moment of the pingWhen several buyers want the same lead, the price rises.
Return termsBroader return terms are usually reflected in the price.

For how these factors work across all insurance lines, see how much insurance leads cost. For the pricing models behind them, see how lead pricing works. Judge cost against issued policies, not against the price per lead alone.

Which vendors offer IUL leads?

IUL leads are offered by several types of vendor. None of them is right for every agent, so compare them on the checklist above.

Types of vendors that sell IUL leads
Vendor typeHow it gets IUL leadsWhat to ask
Lead broker using ping/postRoutes leads from several generators to buyers by filterWhether IUL is a separate product choice on the source forms
Life-focused lead generatorRuns its own ads and life forms with a product questionTo see the ads, the landing page and the form

Aged lead sellerResells older life leads, sometimes tagged by productThe original request date and how the IUL tag was set

For seller types across every insurance line, see insurance lead companies. Before your first order, read how to buy life insurance leads.

Common mistakes when buying IUL leads

  • Buying general life leads labeled as IUL. If the consumer never chose the product, the first meeting starts from zero.
  • Skipping the creative review. The ad shapes what the consumer expects from your call.
  • Giving up after one missed meeting. IUL leads often need rescheduling. Plan several contacts.
  • Judging the source on booked meetings alone. Track through to applications and issued policies.
  • Buying states or ages your carriers do not write. Those leads cannot be placed, whatever the price.

IUL leads are one part of the market for insurance leads for agents. For the path from ad to agency, see how insurance lead generation works. If you run life forms that capture IUL interest and want to sell those leads, see sell life insurance leads.

Frequently asked questions

Are IUL leads the same as indexed universal life leads?

Yes. IUL is the short form of indexed universal life. IUL leads, IUL insurance leads and indexed universal life leads all describe the same lead type.

Why does the ad behind an IUL lead matter?

The ad and the landing page set what the consumer expects from the first conversation. Ask to see them before you buy, and check them with your own compliance team.

Can a captive agent buy IUL leads?

Yes, if the agent's carrier offers an IUL product. The agent filters the leads to the states and ages that carrier writes.
