Ping/post vs live transfer vs pay-per-call leads: how to compare the three models

Ping/post sells a web form lead in a real-time auction, and your team calls the consumer. A live transfer call center calls the consumer, qualifies them and hands the live call to your agent. Pay-per-call networks route an inbound call from the consumer straight to your line. Compare them on who qualifies, how consent is evidenced, speed to contact and cost per booked job or signed case.

This guide is for aggregators, buying desks, appointment-setting companies, contractors and intakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Glossary teams choosing between the three models, or adding a second one. It explains how each model works, who qualifies the consumer and who makes the call, how consent is captured and evidenced, how speed to contact differs, how to compare cost on the same basis, and when each model fits.

Summit Leads sells web form leads by real-time ping/postPing/postA real-time selling method in which a lead is pinged to buyers with partial data, buyers bid, and the winning bidder receives the full lead by post. Glossary. We work with web form leads for now. Calls are planned for mid-to-late Q4 2026.

What each lead model is

Ping/post web form leads

A consumer fills in a web form and agrees to be contacted. The supplierSupplierAny company that provides leads to a buyer, whether it generates them itself or brokers them from publishers. Glossary sends a ping without contact details to the buyers whose filters match, each buyer bids or passes, and the winning bid receives the full lead by post. Your team then calls the consumer. See how the ping/post integration works and ping-post explained.

Live transfers

A live transferLive transferA lead delivered as a phone call that is connected directly to a buyer's agent while the consumer is still on the line. Glossary call center calls the consumer, usually after a web form request, asks qualifying questions and transfers the consumer, still on the line, to your agent. You receive a conversation in progress rather than a record to call.

Pay-per-call

The consumer sees an ad or a page with a phone number and calls it. Pay-per-call networks route the inbound call to a buyer whose coverage and hours match. You pay for calls that meet the billing rule agreed with the network, such as a minimum duration.

Who qualifies the consumer and who makes the call

  • Ping/post: the form qualifies. The consumer answers the questions on the form, your filters decide which leads you bid on, and your team makes the first call.
  • Live transfer: the call center qualifies. Its agent asks the questions you agreed, and the consumer is transferred only if the answers match. Your agent picks up a call that is already open.
  • Pay-per-call: the consumer calls in. The network may screen calls by caller location, time of day or a short phone menu, and your agent qualifies the caller on the call.

The more qualification happens before the buyer, the less control the buyer has over the questions asked and how they are asked. Agree the qualifying questions in writing for live transfers, and the screening rules for calls.

Each model leaves a different record. Ask for the record before you buy at volume, and check it against the way your team will contact the consumer. This section describes the records, not what any law requires; for the rules, see TCPA compliance and take advice on your own campaigns.

The consent record each lead model leaves
ModelHow consent is capturedWhat evidences it
Ping/post web form leadThe consumer ticks or accepts consent language on the form before submitting.A TrustedForm certificate for the form session, with the consent language shown, the timestamp, the IP address and the page URL.
Live transferThe outbound call usually relies on consent given earlier, often on a web form; the consumer then agrees on the call to be transferred. The consent record from the original form, plus the call recording of the qualifying call and the transfer.
Pay-per-callThe consumer places the call, in response to an ad or a page. The call recording, and the ad or page that showed the number.

Every Summit lead carries a TrustedForm consent certificateConsent certificateA record, often produced by a third-party consent certificate provider, that shows how and when a consumer gave consent on a web form. Glossary. For what a usable record looks like, see lead quality standards.

How speed to contact differs

Speed to contact means how soon your team is talking to the consumer after the consumer asked for help.

  • Ping/post: the lead arrives seconds after the consumer submits, so the speed to contact depends on how fast your team calls. A slow dialer or a lead worked the next morning loses most of the advantage of real-time delivery.
  • Live transfer: contact is immediate once the transfer connects, but only for consumers the call center reached. Your agents have to be free when the transfer arrives.
  • Pay-per-call: contact is immediate, because the consumer is calling you. Calls arrive when consumers choose to call, so staffing has to follow call volume and your published hours.

For how timing affects web form leads after the first window, see real-time vs aged leads.

How to compare cost per booked job or signed case

Price per lead, per transfer and per call are not comparable on their own, because each model hands you the consumer at a different stage. Compare every source on the cost of the outcome you sell: a booked job for home services, a signed case for legal intake.

  1. Pick one outcome

Define the outcome once, such as a booked appointment, a sold job or a signed retainer, and use it for every source.

  2. Run each source on the same basis

Test the models in the same states and the same period, with the same team working them, so differences come from the source.

  3. Add up the full cost

Include what you paid for leads, transfers or billable calls, minus approved returns or credits, plus the staff time spent working them.

  4. Divide by outcomes

Cost per booked job or signed case is the full cost of a source divided by the outcomes it produced. Compare that figure across models, not the price per unit.

Track the steps between purchase and outcome as well: contact rate, appointment or intake rate and close rate. They show where a source loses value. The lead cost calculator runs this math with your own numbers.

When each model fits

  • Ping/post web form leads fit buyers with their own dialer or call center, filters they want applied before they pay, and a need for a written consent record with every lead. They also fit aggregators and desks that route or resell leads to clients.
  • Live transfers fit buyers who want a qualified conversation without running outbound dialing, and who can keep agents free to take transfers when they arrive.
  • Pay-per-call fits buyers whose customers prefer to phone, such as urgent service requests, and who can staff the line during the hours they buy.

Many buyers use more than one model. Keep the outcome tracking separate for each source, so one model does not hide the cost of another.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ping/post, live transfer and pay-per-call leads?

Ping/post sells a web form lead in a real-time auction and your team calls the consumer. A live transfer call center calls the consumer, qualifies them and transfers the live call to your agent. Pay-per-call routes an inbound call from the consumer to your line.

Which lead model has the fastest speed to contact?

Live transfers and pay-per-call put your agent on the phone with the consumer immediately. A ping/post lead arrives seconds after the consumer submits, so its speed to contact depends on how fast your team calls.

How is consent evidenced for web form leads and for calls?

For a web form lead, a TrustedForm certificate records the consent language shown, the timestamp, the IP address and the page URL. For live transfers and inbound calls, ask for the call recording, and for a transfer also the consent record from the original form.

How do I compare cost across lead models?

Pick one outcome, such as a booked job or a signed case. For each source, add up what you paid, minus approved returns or credits, plus the staff time spent, and divide by the outcomes it produced. Compare that cost per outcome, not the price per lead, transfer or call.

Does Summit Leads sell live transfers or pay-per-call?

Not yet. We work with web form leads for now. Calls are planned for mid-to-late Q4 2026. Summit’s web form leads are sold by real-time ping/post, exclusive by default with shared delivery on request, and every lead carries a TrustedForm consent certificate.
