Who owns Vermont homes, and how old they are
Vermont's housing stock is old. The Census Bureau's table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) puts that median at 1976, so half of the state's housing units went up in 1976 or before, long before most current bathroom fixtures and layouts.
Owners live in 200,079 of the 273,416 occupied units counted in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). In 71,657 of those owner households, the householder is 65 or older, per table B25007 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024).
The age figure matters to bathroom buyers because owners in that group are the ones who most often ask about curbless showers, grab bars, comfort-height toilets and tub removal. The table counts households; it says nothing about how many of them will request a remodel.
Vermont plumber licenses and contractor registration
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Plumbing in Vermont is a licensed trade. 26 V.S.A. 2198 (2026) says all plumbing and specialty work performed in the state shall be done by persons licensed under chapter 39, which provides for master and journeyman plumber licenses. The section lists exceptions, including plumbing done by an owner or the owner's regular employees in an owner-occupied, freestanding single family dwelling.
The residential contractor chapter covers plumbing installation and repair within its definition of residential construction. Under 26 V.S.A. 5502(2) (2026), a tradesperson licensed, registered or certified by the Department of Public Safety and acting within that license is exempt from registration, and so is a business whose work is done primarily by or under the direct supervision of such employees.

Contract terms Vermont sets for registered contractors
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
A registered contractor must sign a written contract before taking a deposit or starting residential work when the estimated labor and materials exceed $10,000, under 26 V.S.A. 5509(b) (2026). The contract states the price basis (a maximum price, time and materials up to a maximum, or time and materials with no maximum), estimated start and completion dates, the services and materials, and how change orders are approved. Amendments are documented in a signed writing.
Deposits are capped on the first two price types. Section 5509(c) (2026) allows a down payment of up to one-half of the labor cost or one-half of the materials price, whichever is greater; with no maximum price, the parties negotiate it.
Separately, the federal Cooling-Off Rule explained by the FTC lets a consumer cancel certain sales made at home within three days.
Fields Vermont bathroom buyers set
Each field below maps to one of the facts above.
- Project type: whether the request moves drains or supply lines, which brings in a licensed plumber, or only replaces a vanity, tile or a tub surround.
- Homeowner status: an owner can sign the written contract the statute describes; a renter cannot.
- Home age: older Vermont houses often have original pipes, so a build-decade field helps a crew plan the job.
- ZIP code: buyers list the ZIP codes their crews or contractor clients serve, town by town.
Where buyers filter in Vermont
Only one Vermont area is a metropolitan area; the others below are micropolitan, and one spans the New Hampshire line. Populations are Census Bureau estimates for July 1, 2025. Buyers in a rural state like this one usually build territory from ZIP codes rather than metro names.

- Lebanon-Claremont, NH-VT: 224,500 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
