Michigan's contractor licenses name window work. The Bureau of Construction Codes page Helpful Information for Homeowners (checked October 7, 2026) lists screen and storm sash among the trades a maintenance and alteration contractor can qualify for, next to siding, gutters, roofing and carpentry. The trades a holder is qualified in are printed on the license.

The same LARA page (checked October 7, 2026) says contractors offering work that totals $600 or more in labor and materials must be licensed, either as a residential builder or as a maintenance and alteration contractor, and that contractors and their salespersons carry a pocket card. Michigan's home sale cancellation period and other rules for the state are on leads in Michigan.

Michigan climate zones for windows

One ENERGY STAR standard covers the state: the climate zone map (August 2025) shows both peninsulas inside the Northern zone.

The code map has more detail. DOE's county guide, PNNL-33270 (2021 county data), puts 37 Michigan counties in zone 5A and 44 in zone 6A, both moist and 2 counties in zone 7. More Michigan counties fall in 6A than in any other zone.

Residential energy code in Michigan

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

On the DOE Building Energy Codes Program page for Michigan (checked October 7, 2026), the residential code is the 2015 IECC with amendments, adopted October 9, 2015 and effective February 8, 2016. The commercial side moved to the 2021 IECC in 2025, but the page shows no change to the residential edition. Replacement windows in Michigan homes are measured against that residential code. Buyers whose crews also work in Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin should check each state's own DOE page rather than assume the same edition applies across the border.

Michigan housing: older stock, moderate values

The median Michigan housing unit was built in 1972, per table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 62.1% of units built before 1980, including 656,816 built in the 1950s and 672,770 built in 1939 or earlier. The 1970s add another 687,517 units, the largest single decade in the table.

The median owner-occupied value is $231,600 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers that price window projects against home value can set their filters with that range in mind.

How Michigan window buyers narrow their leads

  • Number of windows and scope: storm sash or screens, a few replacement units or a whole house, which also tells a buyer which license trade the job falls under.
  • Home age: postwar and prewar houses make up a large part of the stock counted above.
  • Homeowner status: only the owner can approve the contract.
  • ZIP code: buyers choose ZIP codes in the Lower Peninsula, the Upper Peninsula or both.

Where buyers filter in Michigan
