Michigan homes: detached and older
Michigan has one of the highest shares of detached houses in the country. The Census Bureau's table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 72.0% of Michigan housing units as single-family detached, the fifth highest share of the 50 states. Attached homes, apartments and mobile homes fill the other rows of the table.
Much of that housing is decades old. Table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 62.1% of Michigan units built before 1980, and the median year built is 1972 in table B25035 for the same period.

Michigan storm wind and precipitation
Most of Michigan's 2025 wind records came from thunderstorms. The NOAA Storm Events Database, 2025 details file (dated August 19, 2026) holds 308 Michigan entries with event type Thunderstorm Wind and 15 with event type High Wind, the type used for strong non-thunderstorm wind.
Precipitation was close to normal. Michigan's statewide total for 2025 was 32.02 inches, and the 1991 to 2020 average is 33.91 inches a year, in NOAA's Climate at a Glance series (2025 data).
How the wind figures were counted: Storm Events lists one entry per county or forecast zone per event, so one storm crossing several counties produces several entries.
Michigan trade licenses for gutters and siding
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Michigan treats gutters and siding as two licensed trades. The Bureau of Construction Codes homeowner information page (as of October 2026) says contractors offering work that totals $600 or more in labor and materials must be licensed by LARA. A maintenance and alteration license shows which trades the holder qualifies for, and the page lists gutters and siding as separate entries alongside roofing, carpentry, insulation and others.
The trades a maintenance and alteration contractor may practice are printed on the license. The same page says the license must be displayed at the place of business, and that contractors and their salespersons must carry a pocket card that a homeowner can ask to see.
The residential builder license and the three-day cancellation rule for home solicitation sales are covered on leads in Michigan.
Michigan siding and gutter buyer filters
Michigan buyers often route by trade first, because a contractor's license lists the trades it may practice:
- Project type: gutters, siding or both, and repair or full replacement.
- Homeowner status: the person who owns the house, since a renter cannot sign for exterior work.
- Recent storm damage: whether a recent windstorm led to the request.
- ZIP code: set for each buyer to match crew coverage.

What share of Michigan housing is single-family detached?
72.0% of housing units, the fifth highest share among the 50 states, in the Census Bureau's table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024).

308, plus 15 High Wind records, in the NOAA Storm Events 2025 details file. Each record is one county or forecast zone in one event.
