Illinois plumbing licenses and bathroom contractors

Plumbing work in Illinois needs a state license. The Department of Public Health plumbing page (checked October 7, 2026) says that under the Illinois Plumbing License Law (225 ILCS 320) it licenses plumbers, plumbing contractors and apprentices, and that anyone who installs, alters, extends or repairs plumbing systems in the state must be licensed. A plumber qualifies by passing a state exam after 48 to 72 months as a licensed apprentice.

The Attorney General's guide How to Choose a Contractor (revised July 2026) adds that plumbers display their license number at their place of business and on their vehicles, and keep a list of license numbers for the plumbers and apprentices they employ. The same guide says general contractors are not licensed or certified by the state, though a municipality may require a permit; the wider contractor picture is on leads in Illinois.

Illinois home repair contract and cancellation rules

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Illinois sets paperwork rules through the Home Repair and Remodeling Act. The Attorney General's Know Your Rights sheet (revised 2019) says that for home repair contracts over $1,000 the owner has a right to a written contract or work order that describes the work and states the total cost, and that the owner signs and dates a form acknowledging receipt of the brochure "Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights."

The same sheet describes a cancellation right tied to insurance. When the owner plans to pay for the work through an insurance claim, the contract can be canceled within five business days after a written denial from the insurer or within 30 days after the claim was sent, whichever comes first. The contractor must disclose this right and provide a cancellation form.

The three-day right to cancel a sale made at the home is covered on leads in Illinois. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule is the federal counterpart for some in-home sales.

Illinois owners, owners over 65 and the age of the homes

Of Illinois's 5,036,449 occupied housing units, 3,378,910 are owner-occupied, according to table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Table B25007 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) puts 1,075,771 of those owner households under a householder aged 65 or older.

Bathroom buyers look at older owners because changes for aging in place, such as a zero-threshold shower, a comfort-height toilet or wider doorways, usually start with them. This is a Census count of households, not a measure of any lead supply.

Half of Illinois housing units were built in 1971 or earlier, per table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024).

What Illinois bath remodel buyers screen for

  • Project type: buyers separate jobs that touch supply or drain lines, which need a licensed plumber, from cosmetic updates such as tile, paint and vanity tops.
  • Payment source: some buyers ask whether an insurance claim is involved, because that adds a cancellation window to the contract.
  • Homeowner status: only the owner can sign the written contract and the brochure acknowledgment.
  • Home age and ZIP code: buyers pair the approximate build year with the ZIP codes their crews and permit offices cover.
