Mississippi's compulsory liability system and a car accident lead
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Mississippi requires liability insurance and has no no-fault benefit to exhaust first. The Mississippi Insurance Department (auto insurance page, 2026) says the Compulsory Liability Law is enforced by the Department of Public Safety's Safety Responsibility Division, and that liability coverage pays, up to the policy limits, when the policyholder is at fault. The injured person's claim runs to the other driver and that driver's carrier.
The department lists the rest of a Mississippi policy as optional: uninsured and underinsured motorist protection, collision, coverage for a stolen car and medical payments coverage, which it says pays the expenses of persons injured in an accident regardless of fault. A lead that records which of these the claimant carries shows the firm every policy that might respond.
Accident date and fault on a Mississippi lead
Because liability coverage pays, up to its limits, when its policyholder is at fault, as the Mississippi Insurance Department (2026) explains, the fault answers on a Mississippi lead (who hit whom, whether a citation was issued, what the police report says) show which carrier a claim would run to.
Buyers also filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary on accident date, because firms want claims where the medical records and witness accounts are still fresh. Each firm client sets its own fault and accident age limits.
The 25/50/25 floor Mississippi set in 2006
According to the Mississippi Insurance Department (2026), the minimum liability requirements rose on January 1, 2006 to $25,000 per person (limited to a single accident), $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 per accident for property damage. A driver can also meet them with a bond or a cash or security deposit in the same amounts. The department itself notes that the minimums may not be sufficient given rising medical and repair costs.
Mississippi traffic deaths and serious injuries
NHTSA's FARS state table lists 733 traffic fatalities in Mississippi in 2023, the latest year treated as final here. FARS tracks fatal crashes; injury crashes are not in this count.
The Mississippi Office of Highway Safety FY2024 annual report gives the injury side from state data: 3,205 serious traffic injuries in 2023, down from 3,344 in 2022.
Mississippi requires lawyer ads to go to the Bar first
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Mississippi adds a filing step that many states do not have. Under Rule 7.5 of the Mississippi Rules of Professional Conduct (MRPC), and the submission policies the Supreme Court of Mississippi approved by order on December 9, 2004, a copy or recording of an advertisement goes to the Office of General Counsel of The Mississippi Bar (Rule 7.5 page, 2026) before its first dissemination. The filing fee is $25 per timely submission and $150 per submission not timely filed.
- Rule 7.2(a), MRPC: defines an advertisement as an active quest for clients, including telephone, television, radio and computer-accessed communication.
- Rule 7.5(b), MRPC: lists exemptions from filing, among them web pages viewed in a search the person started without solicitation.
The Bar describes its role as monitoring lawyer advertising to avoid misleading communications. This page lists the rules the Bar cites; it does not assess whether any lead program or advertisement meets them.
What buyers in Mississippi filter on
Mississippi orders tend to turn on injury and coverage more than on fault. Common fields:
- Accident date: keeps records and witness memory recent.
- Fault answers: show whose liability carrier the claim runs to.
- Injury and treatment: what the reduced or full award would be built on.
- Claimant's coverage: UM/UIM or medical payments coverage, which MID lists as optional.
- Representation status: removes claimants who already have counsel.
- ZIP code: buyers name the ZIP codes they serve.
Where buyers filter in Mississippi
Mississippi has four metro areas large enough to rank here by the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates, and one of them is centered in Tennessee. Much of the state sits outside any of them, so buyers often add rural ZIP codes directly.
- Jackson: 609,847 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Gulfport-Biloxi: 431,329 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Memphis (TN-MS-AR): 1,341,412 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
- Hattiesburg: 158,014 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
