Alaska's range of climate zones
Alaska runs from a marine zone in the southeast to the coldest zone on the IECC scale. DOE's county guide, PNNL-33270 (2021 county data), puts 11 boroughs and census areas, Anchorage among them, in IECC zone 7, and 8 more, including Fairbanks North Star, the North Slope and the Kusilvak Census Area (listed under its former name, Wade Hampton), in zone 8. Juneau and six others are in zone 6A, and Ketchikan Gateway, Sitka and Prince of Wales-Hyder are in zone 5C. DOE uses A for moist and C for marine; zones 7 and 8 carry no letter.
For windows the picture is simpler. The ENERGY STAR climate zone map (August 2025) puts all of Alaska in the Northern zone, so the same ENERGY STAR criteria apply in Ketchikan and in Utqiagvik.
What DOE shows for an Alaska energy code
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Alaska has no statewide residential energy code on the DOE record. The Building Energy Codes Program page for Alaska (checked October 7, 2026) reads "None Statewide; see AHFC Building Energy Efficiency Standard 2018" in both the residential and commercial columns, shows July 1, 2013 as the effective and adoption date, and marks state amendments as yes. AHFC is the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, which the page names as the state's contact for code adoption.
When Alaska homes were built and what they are worth
Most Alaska housing was built in 1980 or later. The median year built is 1986 in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), and table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 36.8% of units built before 1980.
Construction peaked in two decades. The same table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 72,771 Alaska units built in the 1970s, close to the count for the 1980s. A buyer can ask the request form for the approximate year the house was built and whether the windows are original.
For pricing by home value, table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) gives a median of $352,900 for owner-occupied Alaska homes.
Alaska registration trades that name windows
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Alaska registers specialty contractors by trade, and the trade names appear on the certificate. The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing Specialty Contractor Trades List (form 08-4818, rev. September 3, 2025) defines a Glazing Contractor under 12 AAC 21.360 as one who installs windows, frames and sashes of metal or wood, glass doors with their frames and hardware, or stained glass windows, doors and ceiling panels, but who does not cut openings for skylights or install roof bubbles.
Windows also appear in two carpentry trades on the same list: finish carpentry (12 AAC 21.240) includes windows and sills, and rough carpentry (12 AAC 21.250) includes metal or plastic windows. A buyer that routes Alaska requests to specialty registrants can match the request to the trade shown on each certificate.
State registration under AS 08.18 and the residential contractor endorsement are covered on leads in Alaska.
What Alaska window buyers filter on
- ZIP code: a ZIP code places the job in one of the four IECC zones above and shows a crew how far it has to travel.
- Number of windows and scope: glass and sash work, or new openings and framing, which line up with different trades on the list.
- Home age: the large 1970s and 1980s bands above are why buyers ask whether the windows are original.
- Homeowner status: the owner is the person who signs for the work.
Where buyers filter in Alaska
The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates list two Alaska metropolitan areas and, as the largest micropolitan area, the capital. Many communities lie outside all three, and window buyers reach them by listing their ZIP codes.
- Anchorage: 405,821 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Fairbanks-College: 93,972 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Juneau (micropolitan): 31,609 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
