Alaska housing by decade and median value
Alaska built a larger share of its housing in the 1980s than any other state. Table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) places 78,686 of 328,491 Alaska housing units in 1980 to 1989, which is 24.0 percent, first among the 50 states for that decade. The 1970s add 72,771 more, so 46.1 percent of the stock dates from 1970 to 1989.
Alaska's median value for owner-occupied homes is $352,900 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers who want a price band narrow it with ZIP codes.

Alaska owners and recent home purchases
Recent purchases are tracked in table B25038 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), which counts 29,411 Alaska owner households that moved in during 2020 or later. New owners often replace flooring before their furniture arrives, so buyers treat move-in timing as a useful field. The number is a count of households and not of flooring requests.
For the full owner base, table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 180,833 owner-occupied units among 270,533 occupied Alaska housing units. Flooring buyers usually set an owners-only filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary, since an owner is the person who signs the contract.
Move-in years in the 2024 table are grouped as 2020 to 2022 and 2023 or later, so the recent-mover period begins in 2020.
Alaska trades and bonds that apply to floor work
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Alaska names the trades a specialty contractor can register under, and flooring falls into three of them in the division's Specialty Contractor Trades List (12 AAC 21.200 to 21.570, rev. September 3, 2025):
- Floor covering contractor (12 AAC 21.350): installs carpet, flexible or resilient tile, and flexible or resilient sheet flooring.
- Finish carpentry contractor (12 AAC 21.240): its listed work includes hardwood flooring and floor refinishing.
- Tile and terrazzo contractor (12 AAC 21.520): installs tile or terrazzo on floors, walls and manufactured surfaces, with the lath needed to secure it.
Bond amounts differ by registration type. Under AS 08.18.071(b) (division compilation, September 2023), a specialty contractor files a $10,000 bond, while a contractor whose work on one project is $10,000 or less, not split to avoid the higher bond, files $5,000. 12 AAC 21.700 lets a contractor in that smaller category apply for handyman registration.
Registration itself, the residential endorsement and the door-to-door cancellation period are covered on leads in Alaska.
Setting up an Alaska flooring order
Alaska orders are usually narrow on location and specific on the job. The fields buyers set:
- ZIP code: road-connected ZIP codes an installer can reach, which matters more in Alaska than in most states.
- Material and rooms: carpet, resilient sheet or tile, hardwood, laminate or ceramic tile, with a room count.
- Homeowner status: owners only, or owners and landlords.
- Move-in timing: whether the home was bought in the last year or so.
