How Alaska registers roofing contractors
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Roofing has its own registration category in Alaska. The state's Specialty Contractor Trades List (form 08-4818, rev. September 3, 2025) includes Roofing Contractor among the trades that appear on a specialty contractor certificate of registration. Under 12 AAC 21.460, that trade works on all types of roofs with all types of roofing material and covers:
- installing roof sheathing
- installing or applying roof weatherproofing and insulation
- repairing structural damage to a roof support system, but not building a new one
- extending roof penetrations, vents and drains on an existing structure, except electrical penetrations
- installing skylights
A specialty contractor files a surety bond when applying. AS 08.18.071(b)(3) (statutes compiled September 2023) sets it at $10,000 for a mechanical or specialty contractor, and the bond answers for unpaid taxes, unpaid suppliers and workers, and amounts awarded for negligent or improper work.
For a buyer, the scope list draws a line: a request to rebuild framing or raise a new roof structure may need a general contractor rather than a roofing specialty registrant. General contractor registration and the residential endorsement are described on leads in Alaska, along with the five-day door-to-door rule.
Alaska storm declarations and the hail record
FEMA's Disaster Declarations Summaries show four Alaska major disasters declared from January 1, 2023 to October 7, 2026 that name severe storms: DR-4767 on April 6, 2024; DR-4859 on January 15, 2025; DR-4893 on October 22, 2025, which also names the remnants of Typhoon Halong; and DR-4904 on April 7, 2026.
Hail is rare in the Alaska record. NOAA's Storm Events Database 2025 file contains 2 Alaska records with the event type Hail.
Method used for both counts: hail means Alaska Storm Events records of type Hail that began in 2025, one per county or forecast zone per event. Declarations means distinct state DR declarations with an incident type of severe storm, tornado or hurricane, or with one of those named in the title. DR-4904 is filed by FEMA as a winter storm but titled severe storm, so it counts; declarations titled only for winter storms do not.
Alaska homes by owner and age
The largest group of Alaska homes dates from the 1980s. Table B25034 counts 78,686 units built from 1980 to 1989 and puts 36.8% of all units before 1980, and table B25035 gives a median year built of 1986 (both ACS 5-year 2020-2024).
Owners occupy 180,833 of the state's 270,533 occupied housing units in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024).
What Alaska roofing buyers filter on
Alaska filters tend to start with distance, since many communities are off the road system:
- ZIP code: buyers list the ZIP codes their crews can reach, often in and around Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau.
- Project type: roof covering, insulation and weatherproofing, skylights or structural repair, matched to what a roofing specialty registrant may do.
- Homeowner status: the owner signs for the work.
- Insurance claim status: whether the job follows a storm loss with a claim or is a planned replacement.
Where buyers filter in Alaska
Alaska has two metropolitan areas, Anchorage and Fairbanks-College, and Juneau is the largest micropolitan area. Their July 1, 2025 Census Bureau estimates are below. Buyers are not limited to these areas; any Alaska ZIP code can be selected.
- Anchorage: 405,821 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Fairbanks-College: 93,972 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Juneau (micropolitan): 31,609 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
