Iowa is still on the 2012 IECC
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
The residential energy code is the first thing that sets Iowa apart. The Department of Energy's Building Energy Codes Program page for Iowa (checked October 7, 2026) shows the 2012 IECC with state amendments as the current residential code, adopted March 12, 2014 and effective April 1, 2014.
Window buyers ask about the code because it sets the minimum thermal values a replacement unit has to meet when a permit is pulled.
ENERGY STAR and IECC zones across Iowa
There is one ENERGY STAR answer for the whole state. On the ENERGY STAR window climate zone map (August 2025), Iowa falls entirely inside the Northern zone, so a buyer can match leads to a single ENERGY STAR product tier from Sioux City to Dubuque.
The IECC map splits the state. The DOE county guide PNNL-33270 (2021 county data) places 84 Iowa counties in zone 5A and the remaining 15 in zone 6A; most of the 15 sit along the Minnesota line, and Black Hawk County is one of them. In DOE's labels the A stands for a moist climate. The code zone, not the ENERGY STAR zone, is what an Iowa building official checks.
How old Iowa homes are, and what they are worth
Iowa has a large stock of homes built before modern window standards. The Census Bureau's table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 61.6% of Iowa housing units built before 1980, and table B25035 for the same period gives a median year built of 1972.
The oldest group is the largest single band in that table: 338,420 Iowa units were built in 1939 or earlier, according to table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Farmhouses and older town homes of that age often have nonstandard openings, so buyers may want the request to record approximate home age and whether the windows are original.
Home values are moderate. The median value of an owner-occupied Iowa home is $208,000 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), which buyers can weigh against the number of windows in a request when they set price tiers.
Registration for Iowa window installers
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Iowa has no window license as such, but window work falls inside the state's registration rule. The Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing uses the construction definition in rule 871-23.82 (checked October 7, 2026), and that rule lists window and door (prefabricated) installation contractors, along with glass and glazing contractors, as construction.
The DIAL contractor registration page (checked October 7, 2026) states that contractors earning at least $2,000 a year from construction must register, and that subcontractors are not covered by a general contractor's registration. The state's other home improvement and in-home sale rules are on leads in Iowa.
Filters Iowa window buyers set
Each filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary below maps to one of the Iowa facts on this page.
- ZIP code: the 15 zone 6A counties and the rest of the state can be bought as separate territories.
- Home age: separates pre-1940 homes with older openings from homes built after 1980.
- Number of windows and scope: a whole-house job or a few units, which shapes how a buyer prices against home value.
- Homeowner status: only the owner can approve a replacement and pull the permit.
