Iowa is a state of detached, older houses

Close to three in four Iowa housing units are single-family detached homes: 72.2% in the Census Bureau's table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Each of those houses has its own walls and gutter runs, and the owner decides on exterior work without an association vote.

The stock is old. The median Iowa housing unit was built in 1972, in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), and table B25034 for the same period puts 61.6% of units before 1980. The largest single age band in that table is homes built in 1939 or earlier. Buyers can ask for the build year at intakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Iowa wind reports and rainfall in 2025

Iowa logged two kinds of damaging wind in 2025. NOAA's Storm Events Database, 2025 details file holds 183 Iowa records with event type High Wind, which covers strong wind without a thunderstorm, and 564 records with event type Thunderstorm Wind, which covers gusts from convective storms.

The state was slightly drier than normal. In NOAA's Climate at a Glance statewide series (2025 data), Iowa received 33.54 inches in 2025, while the 1991 to 2020 average is 35.55 inches a year. That water runs off Iowa roofs into gutters and downspouts in a typical year.

About the counts: NOAA writes one Storm Events record for each county or forecast zone an event touches, so the figures count records, not separate storms. The rainfall value is the statewide total for January through December.

Iowa registration and the siding and gutter trades

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Iowa registers contractors rather than licensing these trades. Iowa Code 91C.1 (Iowa Code 2026) defines a contractor as a person in the business of construction, as the Iowa Administrative Code defines construction for the state employment security law, and excludes a person who earns less than $2,000 a year or works only on the person's own property.

That definition is in rule 871-23.82 (effective February 26, 2025). Its group k, roofing, siding and sheet metal contractors, covers establishments that install roofing, siding and sheet metal and do roof drainage work such as downspouts and gutters, and its list of examples includes siding, metal gutter installation and metal downspout installation. The contractor registration page of the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing links to this rule as the list of work that counts as construction.

How buyers narrow Iowa siding and gutter requests

  • Recent storm damage: a yes or no question on whether wind or a storm caused the request, set against the records above.
  • Project type: siding replacement, siding repair, new gutters or gutter repair, each sold as its own category.
  • Homeowner status: only owners of the house, since a tenant cannot approve exterior work.
  • ZIP code: buyers list the ZIP codes their crews travel to, from one metro to the whole state.
