Minnesota law lists siding and gutters as one special skill
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Minnesota names gutters in its contractor law. Section 326B.802, subdivision 15 (2025 Minnesota Statutes) divides residential work into eight special skills, and paragraph (e), exterior finishing, includes siding; soffit, fascia and trim; exterior plaster and stucco; painting; and rain carrying systems, including gutters and down spouts.
The count of skills decides the license category. Under the same section, a residential remodeler improves existing residential real estate by providing two or more special skills, while a specialty contractor provides only one. Section 326B.805, subdivision 2 (2025 Minnesota Statutes) says a specialty contractor may be licensed by the commissioner as a residential building contractor or residential remodeler.
The statute defines residential real estate as a new or existing building constructed for habitation by one to four families, including detached garages. Who must hold a Department of Labor and Industry license, and the home solicitation cancellation rule, are on leads in Minnesota.
Detached houses make up most Minnesota housing
Two of every three Minnesota housing units are detached houses. The Census Bureau's table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 1,680,195 single-family detached units out of 2,545,030, a share of 66.0%. Attached houses, apartment buildings and mobile homes are counted on their own lines in the same table.
Half of the state's housing units were built in 1979 or earlier, according to table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). A buyer can ask for the approximate build year to tell a first replacement of original siding from a repair on newer cladding.
Minnesota thunderstorm wind and high wind in 2025
Minnesota logged 415 Thunderstorm Wind records and 80 High Wind records in the 2025 Storm Events details file from NOAA (2025). High Wind is the event type for damaging wind that does not come from a thunderstorm.
Statewide precipitation came to 26.56 inches in 2025, in NOAA's Climate at a Glance series (2025 data). The same series gives 28.57 inches a year as the 1991 to 2020 average, so 2025 finished 2.01 inches below it.
The wind numbers count 2025 Minnesota records by event type, where one record covers one county or forecast zone in one event. The rain numbers are 12-month totals through December.
Minnesota siding and gutter lead filters
Buyers in Minnesota usually set these four fields first.
- Project type: siding, gutters or both, and repair or replacement, which also shows whether the job stays inside one special skill.
- Homeowner status: the owner of the house approves exterior work, so renters are screened out.
- Recent storm damage: whether thunderstorm or other wind damage led to the request.
- ZIP code: the area each crew covers, from the Twin Cities to regional centers.
