Owner households and new arrivals in Minnesota

Most Minnesota households own. Table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 1,666,687 owner-occupied units among 2,307,955 occupied units, and by our count from the same table that owner share is the seventh highest of the 50 states.

Of those owners, 249,615 households moved in during 2020 or later, according to table B25038 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Floors are one of the first things people change after closing on a house, while rooms are still empty, so some buyers ask for the move-in year on each request. This is a count of owner households; it says nothing about how many leads exist.

Move-in years in the 2024 release start with a 2020 to 2022 group, so 2020 is the earliest year this figure can begin.

Minnesota housing by age and value

The 1970s produced more of today's Minnesota homes than any other single decade: 360,449 units in the Census Bureau's table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). The 2000s follow with 338,981. The table merges the oldest decades into two rows; the row for 1949 or earlier, 499,978 units, spans many decades and so is larger than any single decade.

Where flooring sits in Minnesota contractor licensing

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Minnesota sorts residential trades into eight special skills. Subdivision 15(d) of section 326B.802 (2025 Minnesota Statutes) defines interior finishing to include floor covering, wood floors, ceramic, marble and quarry tile, cabinets and counter tops, insulation, painting, stair and guardrail installation, and wallpapering. Subdivision 16 calls a person who offers only one special skill a specialty contractor.

Section 326B.805 (2025 Minnesota Statutes) lists the exemptions from the license requirement in subdivision 6. Clause (8) covers specialty contractors who provide only one special skill. Clause (5) covers a person whose gross annual receipts from work that would need a license do not exceed $15,000; that person must file an affidavit for a certificate of exemption and must apply for a license once receipts pass $15,000 in a calendar year.

The license itself and the three-day cancellation rule for home sales are covered on leads in Minnesota.

Minnesota flooring buyer filters

Each Minnesota request carries the fields below, and a buyer can require or ignore each one per campaign.

  • Material and rooms: carpet, wood floors, tile or vinyl plank, matching the skills a buyer's installers offer, plus room count.
  • ZIP code: the Twin Cities suburbs, a regional city, or a rural route, set ZIP by ZIP.
  • Owner status: the requester owns and lives in the home.
  • Move-in timing: a recent purchase, for programs aimed at new owners.

Filters still work at the ZIP code level.

  • Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI: 3,790,295 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
  • Duluth, MN-WI: 281,219 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
