Kansas storm disasters and hail records since 2023
No state had more major disaster declarations for severe storms than Kansas over this period. FEMA's Disaster Declarations Summaries list 11 Kansas declarations from January 1, 2023 to October 7, 2026, the same number as Missouri. Seven of the 11 came in 2025 and 2026:
- 2023: DR-4747 (October 26)
- 2024: DR-4800 (July 15), DR-4811 (August 20), DR-4824 (September 24)
- 2025: DR-4869 (May 21), DR-4883 (July 22), DR-4891 (September 11), DR-4897 (December 19)
- 2026: DR-4926 (June 30), DR-4940 and DR-4943 (both September 1)
Hail ran high as well. The NOAA Storm Events 2025 details file holds 541 Kansas records with event type Hail, behind only Texas and Oklahoma.
How these were counted: one hail record equals one county or forecast zone on one 2025 storm date. A FEMA declaration is counted once if its incident type is a severe storm, tornado or hurricane or its title names one. DR-4869 is titled for a severe winter storm along with winds, flooding and wildfires, but FEMA files it as a severe storm, so it is in the count; declarations filed under winter storm incident types are not.
What the Kansas roofing registration act asks of roofers
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Kansas has a statute written only for roofers, the Kansas roofing registration act (K.S.A. 50-6,121 through 50-6,138, enacted 2013). Three of its sections bear on who a roofing buyer's contractor clients can be:
- K.S.A. 50-6,125 (enacted 2013): an applicant files a certificate of liability insurance of not less than $500,000, plus proof of workers' compensation coverage or an exemption affidavit. The insurer must tell the Attorney General if the policy is canceled or lapses.
- K.S.A. 50-6,127 (enacted 2013): the registration number must be valid and in good standing when a project is solicited and while the job is performed, and it is written on each roofing permit.
- K.S.A. 50-6,123 (enacted 2013): a person without a valid certificate may not bring or maintain a court claim related to work as a roofing contractor.
Under subsection (e) of K.S.A. 50-6,125 (2013), a roofer whose registration is not in good standing must stop soliciting or entering new roofing contracts from the date of the Attorney General's notice. Who registers and the door-to-door cancellation rule are covered on leads in Kansas.
Age and ownership of Kansas housing
More than half of the Kansas housing stock predates 1980: 55.9% of units in the Census Bureau's table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). The same table counts 198,683 units built in 1939 or earlier. The median year structure built is 1976 in table B25035 (2020-2024).
Owners occupied 788,409 of the state's 1,174,060 occupied housing units in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Those owners are the people who can sign a Kansas roofing contract.
What Kansas roofing buyers filter on
- ZIP code: with declarations in most recent years, buyers often add or drop ZIP codes as new disaster areas are named.
- Insurance claim status: filed, planned or none, since hail and wind work is often paid from a homeowners claim.
- Project type: repair after a storm, inspection, or full replacement on an older roof.
- Homeowner status: only the owner can approve the work.
