Thunderstorm wind and heavy rain on Alabama homes

No state had more thunderstorm wind entries in 2025. NOAA's Storm Events Database file for 2025 lists 1,532 Alabama records coded Thunderstorm Wind. The same file lists 0 Alabama records coded High Wind, the event type for strong wind that is not produced by a thunderstorm.

Alabama is also among the wettest states. Its statewide normal for 1991 to 2020 is 56.88 inches a year, third highest of the 49 states in NOAA's Climate at a Glance statewide series (2025 data), and the 2025 total was 51.8 inches. Gutters and downspouts on an Alabama house handle that volume in every season, and lap siding near the ground takes splash-back where runs overflow.

Counting method: one Storm Events record stands for one county or forecast zone touched by one event, so a squall line that crosses ten counties adds ten records. Rainfall is the statewide 12-month total ending in December.

Detached houses and build years in Alabama

Detached single-family houses make up 69.1% of Alabama housing units in the Census Bureau's table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 13th highest of the 50 states. Attached homes, apartment buildings and mobile homes make up the rest of the count.

Half of Alabama housing units were built in 1986 or earlier, according to table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). In table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 42.1% of units date from before 1980. Cladding and gutters on those houses may be original or may already have been replaced, so buyers can ask for the approximate build year when the request comes in.

Alabama licensing for exterior remodeling

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Alabama ties its home builder license to a dollar line. The definition of residential home builder in Code of Alabama 34-14A-2(16) (2026 text, last amended by Act 2024-443) covers the repair, improvement or reimprovement of a residence of not more than three floors and four units when the cost of the undertaking exceeds $10,000. The definition sets a lower line of $2,500 for residential roofers and names no separate amount for siding or gutter work.

What counts toward that line is set in subdivision (5) of the same section (2026 text): the total cost of materials, labor, supervision, overhead and profit. The section also says nothing in it prevents a person from doing this work on his or her own residence.
