Idaho's dry climate zones and its ENERGY STAR zone

Every Idaho county carries DOE's dry label. The county guide PNNL-33270 (2021 county data) puts 22 Idaho counties in IECC zone 5B and the other 22 in zone 6B; DOE uses B for dry. Ada and Canyon counties around Boise, Kootenai around Coeur d'Alene, Twin Falls and Nez Perce are 5B. Bonneville around Idaho Falls and Bannock around Pocatello are 6B.

The ENERGY STAR map is simpler. All of Idaho falls in the Northern zone on the ENERGY STAR window climate zone map (August 2025), so one product tier applies in every county even though the code zone changes between the Treasure Valley and eastern Idaho.

Idaho's adopted residential energy code

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

According to the DOE Building Energy Codes Program page for Idaho (checked October 7, 2026), the residential code is the 2018 IECC with state amendments, adopted April 2, 2020 and effective January 1, 2021. DOE lists the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses as the primary state contact for adoption.

Code requirements are set by climate zone, and Idaho has two. Buyers who pass leads to installers in both the 5B and the 6B counties can tag each order with the county zone so the installer knows which column of the code applies.

Idaho housing is young and high in value

Idaho homes are comparatively new. The median year built is 1991 in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), and only 39.0% of units were built before 1980 in table B25034 for the same years.

The biggest decade in table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) is 2000 to 2009, with 145,772 units, followed by 123,893 units from 1970 to 1979. Buyers can ask the request form to record the build decade so installers know whether they are replacing original builder-grade units or older windows.

Values are high as well: table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) gives a median owner-occupied value of $418,600. Buyers who price by project size can read that figure with the window count on each lead.

Contractor registration and disclosures in Idaho

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

The Idaho Attorney General's Consumer Protection Manual (posted April 2018) says Idaho law requires contractors to register with the Idaho Contractors Board, and that a general liability policy of at least $300,000 is required to meet the registration requirements.

The same manual describes a notice rule: before entering into a contract over $2,000 with a homeowner, the general contractor must give a disclosure statement. It tells the homeowner of the right to require lien waivers from subcontractors, to ask for proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance, and to buy an extended title insurance policy covering liens (Attorney General manual, posted April 2018).

The registration statute and Idaho's home solicitation cancellation rule are covered on leads in Idaho.

Filters for Idaho window leads

  • ZIP code: keeps 5B and 6B counties apart, and sets the drive area for each crew.
  • Number of windows and scope: shows whether a job will pass the disclosure statement threshold and how it compares with home value.
  • Home age: separates the large group of homes from the 2000s from older stock.
  • Homeowner status: the homeowner is the person who receives the contractor's disclosure.

Where buyers filter in Idaho

Idaho window orders often begin in the Treasure Valley and add other areas one at a time. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates for the six largest metro areas with Idaho counties are below; Lewiston includes a Washington county, so its figure covers the whole area. ZIP codes outside these areas can be added as well.

  • Boise City: 864,243 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Coeur d'Alene: 191,864 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Idaho Falls: 173,851 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Twin Falls: 123,901 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Pocatello: 91,591 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Lewiston, ID-WA: 65,450 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
