One window zone and one IECC zone in Montana
Montana is uniform on both climate maps a window buyer uses. In the county tables of PNNL-33270, the DOE climate zone guide (2021 data), all 56 counties are IECC zone 6B. DOE uses the letter B for dry, and the same zone applies from Glendive to Kalispell.
The federal window rating map agrees with that single picture. On the ENERGY STAR climate zone map (August 2025), the whole of Montana is in the Northern zone, so one set of qualified products covers a crew's full territory in the state.
The residential energy code in Montana

The DOE Building Energy Codes Program page for Montana (checked October 7, 2026) lists the 2021 IECC with amendments as the state's residential code. The page gives an adoption date of June 11, 2022 and a later effective date of September 21, 2024, and it names the Building Standards Division of the Department of Labor and Industry as the primary contact for code adoption.
Window buyers who work in Montana and a neighboring state can ask contractor clients which edition each job is quoted to, since the edition and the climate zone together set the window requirements in the code.
Montana housing by decade and value
More Montana homes date from the 1970s than from any other decade. Table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 84,554 units built from 1970 to 1979, and 48.9% of all units were built before 1980. A crew pricing a Montana job therefore asks for the year the house was built and whether its windows are original, two fields a request form can capture.
The median year built is 1981 in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), and the median value of an owner-occupied home is $375,800 in table B25077 for the same period.
The Montana contractor license and small window jobs
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Montana's construction contractor license replaced the old registration at the start of 2026. The Department of Labor and Industry's HB 239 notice (2025) told registrants that an existing registration converts automatically to a contractor license on January 1, 2026, keeps its expiration date, and that the cost to apply or renew has not changed.
One exemption in the statute matters for small window jobs. MCA 37-45-104(8) (Montana Code Annotated 2025) exempts work on a single undertaking of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature where the aggregate contract price for labor, materials and all other items is less than $2,500 a job. The exemption does not apply when the work is part of a larger operation or is split into smaller contracts to evade the chapter.

Montana window lead filters
Montana orders are mostly about distance and job size. The common fields:
- ZIP code: one climate zone statewide, so territory follows drive time from a crew's base.
- Number of windows and scope: a one-window repair and a whole-house replacement fall on different sides of the small-job exemption.
- Home age: the 1970s band is the largest, so year built and original windows are useful fields.
- Homeowner status: only the owner can approve the work and sign the contract.
