Montana homeowners aged 65 and older

Montana has 115,345 owner households whose householder is 65 or older, in table B25007 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). That is more than a third of the state's owners. Older owners are the usual source of requests for curbless showers, seated shower areas and support bars, so buyers who sell accessibility work look at this count first. It describes households; it does not measure lead flow.

Owners hold 317,400 of Montana's 458,859 occupied housing units in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). The rest are renter households, which most bathroom buyers screen out.

Half of Montana housing units were built in 1981 or earlier: table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) gives that median year built.

Plumber and contractor licenses in Montana

Montana licenses plumbers by statute. MCA 37-69-301 (2025) says a person working at the field of plumbing in the state, as a master plumber or a journeyman plumber, must first obtain a license, and must carry it or proof of it on the job site.

One exception matters for bathroom intakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Glossary. Under MCA 37-69-102(1)(a) (2025), no license is needed when the owner of a single-family residence used only for the owner's personal use installs the sanitary plumbing and potable water piping. A homeowner who plans to do the plumbing personally is a different job from one who wants a contractor to do all of it.

Construction contractors now hold a state license. MCA 37-45-201, enacted as Chapter 644 of the 2025 Laws, bars engaging in business as a construction contractor without a current license from the department, which MCA 37-45-102 defines as the Department of Labor and Industry. MCA 37-45-104(8) (2025) exempts casual, minor or inconsequential jobs under $2,500, but not work split into smaller contracts to stay under that amount. More Montana rules are on leads in Montana.

Cancelling a Montana remodel sold in the home

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Montana's personal solicitation sales law gives the buyer time after signing. Under MCA 30-14-504 (2025), the buyer may cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing an agreement or offer to purchase. Cancellation happens when written notice reaches the seller, a mailed notice counts as given when it is posted, and the notice does not need a set form as long as it shows the buyer does not intend to be bound.

The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule adds a federal three-day right to cancel for some sales made at the buyer's home.

How Montana bathroom buyers narrow their orders

  • Project type: whether the job moves plumbing, which takes a licensed master or journeyman plumber, or only replaces a vanity, surround or fixtures in place.
  • Who does the plumbing: some owners plan to install their own piping under the owner exception, so buyers can ask whether the homeowner wants a full installation.
  • Homeowner status: owners sign the contract and hold the cancellation right; renter households are usually excluded.
  • ZIP code: buyers draw coverage around the ZIP codes their crews can reach.
