Idaho storm disasters and hail counts
Two federal storm declarations stand out in the Idaho record. FEMA's Disaster Declarations Summaries show DR-4789, declared June 10, 2024, for a severe storm, flooding, landslides and mudslides, and DR-4917, declared June 30, 2026, for severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides and mudslides. A separate April 2026 declaration for straight-line winds alone (DR-4905) falls outside this count.
Hail reports were fewer. The NOAA Storm Events Database 2025 file has 17 Idaho records with the event type Hail, each tied to a county or forecast zone and a date.
Method used for both numbers: the hail count is the number of Idaho Storm Events rows for 2025 with event type Hail, one row per county or zone per storm. The FEMA count covers separate state major disaster (DR) declarations from January 1, 2023 to the October 7, 2026 download whose incident type or title is a severe storm, tornado or hurricane; severe winter storms are not included.
How old Idaho homes are, and who owns them
Idaho housing splits between a large post-2000 stock and an older core. In the ACS 5-year estimates for 2020-2024, table B25034 counts 289,747 of 795,014 units built in 2000 or later, while 39.0% were built before 1980. The median year built in table B25035 is 1991.
Within the older part, the 1970s stand out: the same table B25034 shows 123,893 Idaho units built from 1970 to 1979, more than in any other decade before 1980 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). For homes of that age, intakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Glossary can record the age of the current roof along with the project type.
For the same period, table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) records 514,361 owner-occupied units among 713,005 occupied Idaho units. A roofing lead is only useful when it comes from one of those owners.
Idaho contractor rules for roofing buyers
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
This page does not restate Idaho's contractor law. The state registration requirement for contractors, the board that administers it and the three-day right to cancel a home solicitation sale are described on leads in Idaho, with links to the Idaho Code.
A buyer that resells Idaho roofing leads can check each contractor client's registration status before adding that client's ZIP codes, so the contractor who calls the homeowner is able to sign the job.
What Idaho roofing buyers filter on
The filters below map to the storm and housing facts on this page.
- ZIP code: set to the counties in a declaration area or to a metro such as Boise or Coeur d'Alene.
- Insurance claim status: whether wind or storm damage has been claimed, recorded at intake.
- Project type: repair after wind or hail, or replacement on an older home.
- Homeowner status: the owner signs, so renters are screened out first.
Where buyers filter in Idaho
Idaho buyers often start from Boise and add smaller areas one at a time. The six metro areas below carry the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates; Lewiston reaches into Washington, so its figure is for the whole metro area.
- Boise City: 864,243 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Coeur d'Alene: 191,864 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Idaho Falls: 173,851 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Twin Falls: 123,901 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Pocatello: 91,591 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Lewiston (ID-WA): 65,450 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
