New Mexico license classes for window installers

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

New Mexico names this trade in its licensing rules. The classification list in 14.6.6.9 NMAC (rule dated 3/10/2022, read October 7, 2026) includes GS-14, windows, doors and skylights, which requires two years of experience. Its scope covers fabricating and installing windows and doors, the window, door and skylight framing and hardware that go with them, glazing of frames, panels, sash and doors, and storm doors, windows and skylights including flashing.

The same rule sets a limit: GS-14 does not include structural alterations to enlarge any opening. The GB-2 residential classification, also in 14.6.6.9 NMAC, covers building and altering homes of up to four family units and includes all GS specialty work when it is limited to residential construction.

Who issues these licenses, and New Mexico's rule for door-to-door sales, are covered on leads in New Mexico.

Dry climate zones from the southern border to the northern mountains

Every New Mexico county carries the B letter, which DOE uses for dry climates. In PNNL-33270 for DOE (2021 county data), 13 counties are in IECC zone 4B, including Bernalillo County around Albuquerque; 12 are in zone 5B, including Santa Fe and San Juan counties; and 8 southern counties, among them Doña Ana, Eddy and Lea, are in zone 3B.

For product ratings the state is not uniform either. New Mexico falls in more than one zone on the ENERGY STAR climate zone map (August 2025), so buyers who sell certified units look up the zone for each county or ZIP code in the ENERGY STAR zone finder.

New Mexico's current residential energy code

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

According to the Department of Energy's Building Energy Codes Program page for New Mexico (checked October 7, 2026), the residential code is the 2021 IECC with amendments, adopted January 17, 2024 and effective January 30, 2024. Age and value of New Mexico housing

New Mexico's median housing unit dates from 1985 in the Census Bureau's table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). In table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 42.7% of units were built before 1980, and the 1970s are the largest single decade, with 161,341 units.

The median value of an owner-occupied home is $248,100 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers who quote by project size can weigh that figure when they choose ZIP codes.

Filters New Mexico window buyers rely on

  • Number of windows and scope: whether an opening will be enlarged matters, because the GS-14 scope excludes that structural work.
  • ZIP code: buyers choose the ZIP codes their crews serve across three code zones.
  • Home age: the build year separates homes from the 1970s building wave from newer stock.
  • Homeowner status: the owner is the one who approves and pays for replacement.

Where buyers filter in New Mexico

New Mexico has four metropolitan areas, and all of them sit entirely inside the state. They are listed below with the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates. Much of the state lies outside any metro, and buyers can add those ZIP codes as well.
