Indiana owner households and their ages
Half of Indiana's housing units were built in 1976 or earlier, the median in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers ask for the build year so a crew knows the age of the house before the first visit.
Owners live in 1,916,243 of the 2,716,009 occupied housing units counted in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Those owners are the people who can approve a remodel and sign the contract.
Among them, 595,107 households have a householder aged 65 or older in table B25007 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers with crews that do curbless showers, grab bars and wider doorways look at this group when they plan coverage. It is a Census household count; it does not measure requests.
Indiana plumbing licenses and the owner-occupant exception

Indiana licenses plumbers through the Indiana Plumbing Commission. IC 25-28.5-1-11 (2026 Indiana Code) makes it unlawful to act as a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber in the state without a commission license. Helpers, laborers and registered apprentices of a licensee are outside that section when they do not hold themselves out as plumbers.
To qualify for either exam, an Indiana resident shows four years in an approved apprenticeship or four years of experience in the plumbing trade, under IC 25-28.5-1-12 (2026 Indiana Code).
One exception touches remodel requests directly. IC 25-28.5-1-32 (2026 Indiana Code) excludes an owner occupant of a dwelling with eight or fewer residential units who installs, alters or repairs that dwelling's plumbing. IntakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Glossary questions about who will handle the plumbing help a buyer route those requests. How Indiana treats general contractor licensing is summarized on leads in Indiana.
Indiana contract rules for work inside the house

Indiana's Home Improvement Contracts chapter is not limited to roofs and siding. IC 24-5-11-2.8 (2026 Indiana Code) defines an interior improvement as any alteration, repair, replacement, reconstruction or other modification of the interior of real property, and section 3 counts interior improvements as real property improvements. The chapter reaches contracts priced above $150 under section 4.
Signatures follow a set order. Under IC 24-5-11-11 (2026 Indiana Code), the supplierSupplierAny company that provides leads to a buyer, whether it generates them itself or brokers them from publishers. Glossary must agree to every term by written signature before the consumer signs and before any down payment can be required. IC 24-5-11-12 (2026 Indiana Code) then requires a fully executed, dated copy to go to the consumer immediately after signing.
When a sale is closed in the customer's living room, the federal FTC Cooling-Off Rule may also give the buyer three days to cancel.
