Indiana storm declarations and 2025 hail reports

Three Indiana major disasters with severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes in the title were declared from January 1, 2023 through October 7, 2026, per FEMA's Disaster Declarations Summaries: DR-4704 on April 15, 2023, DR-4882 on July 22, 2025 and DR-4933 on August 25, 2026. The last two also name flooding.

For 2025, the NOAA Storm Events details file holds 131 Indiana records with event type Hail. The file also lists 714 Indiana records typed Thunderstorm Wind in 2025, which are reported separately and are not part of the hail figure.

Counting rules used here: one hail record equals one Storm Events entry for one county or forecast zone with a 2025 begin date, so one storm can create several records. The FEMA figure counts each state major disaster declaration once if its incident type or title is a severe storm, tornado or hurricane; severe winter storms are not included.

Indiana contract rules when insurance pays for the roof

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Indiana places its storm-related rules in Indiana Code chapter 24-5-11 on real property improvement contracts, which reaches agreements priced above $150 under IC 24-5-11-4 (2026 Indiana Code). Two sections matter most for roofing paid by a claim.

IC 24-5-11-10.6 (2026 Indiana Code) applies to contracts signed after June 30, 2017. The consumer may cancel before midnight on the third business day after the later of two dates: the day the contract is signed, or, if a claim is involved, the day the consumer receives the insurer's written final decision on whether the claim or contract is a covered loss. The supplierSupplierAny company that provides leads to a buyer, whether it generates them itself or brokers them from publishers. Glossary must furnish a statement of this right and a detachable notice of cancellation form, and must return payments within ten days, less the reasonable value of emergency work the consumer approved in writing.

IC 24-5-11-10.5 (2026 Indiana Code) bars a supplier from advertising, offering or promising to pay or rebate any part of an insurance deductible to win the contract, including through discounts, gifts or referral fees.

Indiana contractor licensing and the separate home solicitation cancellation rule are covered on leads in Indiana.

Indiana owner-occupied housing and its age

In the Census Bureau's table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 1,916,243 of Indiana's 2,716,009 occupied housing units are owner-occupied, and those owners are the people who can sign for a roof.

Most Indiana housing predates 1980: table B25034 (2020-2024) puts that share at 55.0%, with 474,947 units built in 1939 or earlier. The median year built in table B25035 is 1976 for the same 2020-2024 estimates.

What Indiana roofing buyers filter on

An Indiana buyer's filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary set usually starts with geography after a declared storm:

  • ZIP code: buyers pick the ZIP codes their crews serve, often counties in a recent declaration.
  • Insurance claim status: a pending claim pushes the cancellation deadline to the insurer's decision date.
  • Project type: storm repair, inspection or a full replacement on an older home.
  • Homeowner status: only owners can contract for the roof.
