South Dakota owners, their age and their homes

Of the 365,544 occupied housing units in South Dakota, 250,621 are owner-occupied in table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Ownership comes first for a bathroom buyer because the owner is the one who can authorize new tile, a new tub or moved drain lines.

Among owners, 78,315 households are headed by someone aged 65 or older, according to table B25007 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers follow this group because older owners often ask for grab bars, a shower bench or a step-free shower entry. The count describes households, not leads.

Table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) places the median year built at 1980, so about half of South Dakota homes were built in 1980 or before.

The State Plumbing Commission and local ordinances

In South Dakota, plumbing is licensed by the State Plumbing Commission. SDCL 36-25-17 (read October 7, 2026) says no person may do plumbing that requires a license on property connected to a public system of waterworks or sewerage unless licensed by the commission. The exceptions include plumbing on premises a person owns and occupies as a residence, and plumbing repair work on the person's own property.

The work itself follows one code. Under SDCL 36-25-15 (read October 7, 2026), plumbing systems must be designed, installed and altered in substantial accord with the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code and any amendments the commission adopts. SDCL 36-25-16 (read October 7, 2026) lets a municipality set its own plumbing requirements, inspections and fees, as long as they meet the state minimum standards.

South Dakota rules for in-home bathroom sales

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

South Dakota's consumer protection chapter sets a low dollar line for in-home sales. SDCL 37-24-5.1 (read October 7, 2026) defines a door to door sale as a sale of goods or services with a purchase price of $25 or more in which the seller personally solicits the sale, including one made in response to or following an invitation by the buyer, and the buyer agrees at a place other than the seller's place of business. Section 37-24-5.2 lists transactions that fall outside the definition.

For those sales, SDCL 37-24-5.3 makes it a deceptive practice to skip the written cancellation statement, printed in bold type of at least ten points near the buyer's signature, or to fail to tell the buyer orally of the right to cancel before midnight of the third business day.

A federal rule overlaps here: the FTC explains that its Cooling-Off Rule lets buyers cancel certain sales made at home within three days.

How South Dakota bathroom orders are filtered

  • Water and sewer service: some buyers ask whether the home is on a public system, since that is where the commission license applies.
  • Project type: fixture replacement, tub-to-shower conversion or a full remodel that relocates plumbing.
  • Owner status and age: owner-confirmed requests, with an option to flag owners 65 and older for accessibility crews.
  • Year built: a rough build year tells a crew whether to expect pipes from before 1980.
  • ZIP code: buyers draw their area by ZIP code, which also keeps out ZIP codes in neighboring states.
