How South Dakota homes are heated
Gas and propane together heat almost three of every four South Dakota owner homes. The Census Bureau’s table B25117 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 136,685 owner-occupied homes on utility gas (54.5%) and 44,355 on bottled, tank or LP gas (17.7%), out of 250,621. Only three states have a larger propane share among owner homes. Electricity heats 23.4%.
| Heating fuel | Owner-occupied homes | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utility gas | 136,685 | 54.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Electricity | 58,590 | 23.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Bottled, tank or LP gas | 44,355 | 17.7% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Wood | 3,685 | 1.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Fuel oil or kerosene | 3,463 | 1.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Coal, solar, other fuels or no fuel | 3,843 | 1.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
With renters included, table B25040 (2020-2024 ACS) shows utility gas heating 47.6% of the state’s 365,544 occupied homes and electricity 32.4%.
Why a buyer looks at fuel: it predicts the system on the job. Utility gas and propane both feed furnaces and boilers, but a propane home also has a tank, a regulator and LP-specific parts that a technician must be set up to handle. Electric homes lean toward heat pumps and electric furnaces. The table is a description of the housing, not of how many requests any fuel group sends.
South Dakota heating and cooling degree days
South Dakota’s winters rank among the coldest in the country by this measure. NOAA’s heating degree day series records 7,170 for 2025, 9th highest of the 48 states with a statewide series, though below the 1991-2020 average of 7,633.
The summer of 2025 ran warmer than usual. The cooling degree day series shows 765, about 11% above the 1991-2020 average of 688, placing South Dakota 30th of the 48. Central air repair and replacement have a real season here, even with heating the larger load.
Behind the figures: NCEI counts a heating degree day for each degree a day’s mean temperature falls below 65°F and a cooling degree day for each degree above it. The 2025 value is the statewide total from January to December, and the average is the mean annual total for the thirty years 1991-2020.
South Dakota HVAC contractor licensing
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 8, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
The state requirement on the Department of Revenue’s Contractor’s Excise Tax page (checked October 8, 2026) is a tax license. The page states that any person entering into a contract for construction services, or engaging in services that include the construction, building, installation or repair of a fixture to real property, must have a South Dakota contractor’s tax license.
The same page explains how the tax follows the job chain. On projects that are not for a qualified utility, the prime contractor must issue a prime contractor’s exemption certificate to each subcontractor for each project, showing the prime contractor’s license number, the project location and a description; a blanket certificate is not allowed. A subcontractor without a certificate on file for a project is considered a prime contractor and is subject to the contractor’s excise tax. For an HVAC firm working under a prime contractor, the certificate decides which party owes the tax on that project.
Technicians who work with refrigerant need federal certification under EPA Section 608, which applies in South Dakota as in every state.
South Dakota owners and renters for HVAC buyers
A new furnace or air conditioner is normally the owner’s decision. Table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 250,621 owner-occupied homes and 114,923 renter households, 365,544 occupied homes in all, so roughly two of every three households own. Renters report problems, and landlords decide on replacements.
Housing age, home values and the state’s energy code are on South Dakota window replacement leads, so they are not repeated here.

Minnehaha, home of Sioux Falls, is the most gas-heated of the ten at 78.1%, and Beadle the most electric at 31.5%, in the county data (2020-2024 ACS). Propane, outside the table’s columns, reaches 19.3% of owner homes in both Meade and Brookings counties and 17.9% in Yankton.
Reading the South Dakota numbers for HVAC territory
The official numbers above point to three things for a buyer setting South Dakota coverage:
- Heating is the main event. At 7,170 heating degree days in 2025, 9th of 48 in the NCEI series, furnace and boiler work is the base of a South Dakota HVAC campaign.
- Propane is a statewide factor. With 17.7% of owner homes on bottled, tank or LP gas in table B25117 (2020-2024 ACS), a buyer covering towns beyond Sioux Falls and Rapid City needs technicians who service LP equipment.
- Summers add cooling work. The 765 cooling degree days of 2025 sat above the 1991-2020 average in the cooling series, so air conditioning replacement belongs in the plan for the warm months.
Nothing in these points estimates lead counts or demand; they restate housing and climate facts from the linked sources.
What South Dakota HVAC buyers filter on
South Dakota HVAC buyers filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary on the same kinds of fields as other home services buyers. In South Dakota, these relate to the figures on this page:
- Project type: for example install, replace or repair, for heating or cooling. Heating dominates the year, with a cooling season in summer.
- Homeowner status: owners sign for replacements; see the owner and renter counts above.
- Timeframe: a no-heat call in a January cold snap is urgent, while an air conditioner upgrade can be booked ahead.
- ZIP code: buyers choose the ZIP codes their crews cover, from the Sioux Falls area to the Black Hills.
When HVAC opens, South Dakota buyers will set these filters per campaign, down to the ZIP code, as on Summit’s other home services leads. Once HVAC opens, HVAC leads will be exclusive by default, with shared delivery on request. The complete field list is on the sample HVAC lead.
Where buyers filter in South Dakota
Sioux Falls in the east and Rapid City near the Black Hills are the two metro areas based in South Dakota, and the Sioux City metro reaches into the state’s southeast corner. In the Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimates, Sioux Falls reaches into Minnesota and Sioux City is mainly in Iowa and Nebraska, so both populations are for the whole metro area. Once HVAC opens, buyers will be able to set coverage on any ZIP code, inside these areas or outside them.
- Sioux Falls, SD-MN: 314,638 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
- Rapid City: 156,934 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Sioux City, IA-NE-SD: 145,738 (July 1, 2025 estimate, whole metro area)
