How Wyoming homes are heated
Utility gas is the main heating fuel in most Wyoming homes, with propane, electricity and wood making up most of the rest. The Census Bureau’s table B25117 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 110,562 of the state’s 174,619 owner-occupied homes heated mainly by utility gas, or 63.3%. Propane covers 13.0% of owner homes, the 10th highest share of any state, while fuel oil is almost absent at 0.1%, the lowest share of the 50 states.
| Heating fuel | Owner-occupied homes | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utility gas | 110,562 | 63.3% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Electricity | 29,364 | 16.8% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Bottled, tank or LP gas | 22,641 | 13.0% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Wood | 9,497 | 5.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Fuel oil, coal, solar, other fuels and no fuel | 2,555 | 1.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
Counting renters as well, table B25040 (2020-2024 ACS) puts utility gas at 59.0% and electricity at 23.8% of all 243,318 occupied Wyoming homes. Renters lean more toward electric heat than owners do.
Why an HVAC buyer looks at these shares: the fuel decides the equipment. A gas home usually means a forced-air furnace and a gas line to service, a propane home means a furnace or boiler fed from a tank, and an electric home points to a heat pump or baseboard heat. The shares describe the housing stock; they say nothing about how many leads any group produces.
Heating and cooling needs in Wyoming
Wyoming spends most of the year on the heating side. The NCEI heating degree day series records 7,588 heating degree days for 2025, the 6th highest total among the 48 states with a statewide series, against a 1991-2020 average of 8,225. 2025 was milder than that average, but still far above most of the country.
Cooling is a small share of the load. The cooling degree day series shows 331 for 2025 and a 1991-2020 average of 278, which ranks Wyoming 44th of the 48 states. A Wyoming HVAC campaign is mostly furnace, boiler and heat pump work, with air conditioning as a summer add-on.
Method: each degree day counts how many degrees a day’s mean temperature falls below (heating) or rises above (cooling) 65°F. The 2025 values are the January-December totals in NCEI’s statewide series, and each average is the mean of that series’ annual totals for 1991 through 2020.
Wyoming HVAC contractor licensing
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 8, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
Wyoming has no state HVAC or mechanical contractor license. On the Secretary of State’s business FAQ (checked October 8, 2026), the answer to whether a general contractor license is required sends electrical contractors to the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety and everyone else to the local jurisdiction where the construction takes place. Any trade licensing beyond that is a local matter under the FAQ’s answer.
The electrical side of HVAC work is licensed by the state. The State Fire Marshal’s licensing page (checked October 8, 2026) lists these licenses that bear on heating and cooling jobs:
- LM-H limited electrical technician: limited electrical work for heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, on the load side of the equipment disconnectDisconnectA lead whose phone number is not in service. Glossary, with 4,000 hours of experience (State Fire Marshal electrical licensing page, checked October 8, 2026).
- Low voltage/limited contractor: the company license an LM-H technician works under; the page says a technician doing this work must be employed by a contractor holding a current Wyoming low voltage/limited contractor license.
- Electrical contractor: must employ a Wyoming licensed master electrician full time as master of record, for wiring beyond the limited scopes.
The page also states that Wyoming adopts the National Electrical Code without modification. Anyone who handles refrigerant on a heat pump or air conditioner also needs federal certification under EPA Section 608. A buyer placing Wyoming requests can confirm the city or county rules for the ZIP codes it covers.
Wyoming owners and renters for HVAC buyers
The Census Bureau’s table B25003 counts 174,619 owner-occupied homes and 68,699 renter-occupied homes in Wyoming, out of 243,318 occupied homes in the 2020-2024 ACS. Replacing a furnace or adding central air is a decision for the owner, so the owner count is the base most HVAC campaigns are planned on; a renter’s repair request usually goes through a landlord.
For the age of Wyoming’s housing and its energy code details, see Wyoming window replacement leads; this page does not repeat them.
Wyoming counties by owner-occupied homes
These ten counties hold the most owner-occupied homes in Wyoming. The two fuel columns give the share of each county’s owner homes heated by utility gas and by electricity, from the ACS 5-year 2020-2024 county tables B25003 and B25117. They describe the homes only, not where leads come from.
| County | Owner-occupied homes | Heated by utility gas | Heated by electricity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laramie | 30,537 | 71.7% | 14.1% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Natrona | 24,967 | 78.1% | 14.0% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Campbell | 13,971 | 58.4% | 21.1% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Sweetwater | 13,049 | 85.7% | 9.2% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Fremont | 10,547 | 48.8% | 13.2% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Park | 10,042 | 71.4% | 13.1% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Sheridan | 9,782 | 56.7% | 16.8% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Albany | 8,546 | 67.3% | 16.1% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Lincoln | 6,412 | 24.6% | 37.2% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Uinta | 5,911 | 64.3% | 11.1% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
Sweetwater has the highest gas share in the group at 85.7%, and Lincoln the lowest at 24.6%, where electricity (37.2%) heats more owner homes than gas. Propane is the column that moves most between counties: the same county data (2020-2024 ACS) puts it at 24.1% of owner homes in Fremont and 20.3% in Sheridan, against 2.8% in Sweetwater.
Reading the Wyoming numbers for an HVAC campaign
Three points come out of the official figures above for a buyer planning Wyoming coverage:
- Heating comes first. With 7,588 heating degree days and 331 cooling degree days in 2025 in the NCEI statewide series, furnace and boiler installs and repairs are the core of the work, and cooling is seasonal.
- Gas and propane crews cover most homes. Utility gas and bottled gas together heat 76.3% of owner-occupied homes in the 2020-2024 ACS. A buyer whose technicians work on gas-fired equipment can serve most of the state; oil burner work barely appears.
- Rural counties look different. Fremont, Sheridan and Lincoln have propane or electric shares well above the statewide figures in the county table, so a buyer can match its ZIP code list to the fuels its crews handle.
These points describe housing and climate, not the number of requests in any part of Wyoming.
What Wyoming HVAC buyers filter on
Wyoming HVAC buyers filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary on the same kinds of fields as other home services buyers. Applied to Wyoming, each one connects to a fact on this page:
- Project type: for example install, replace or repair, for heating or cooling. Given the heating degree day total, most Wyoming buyers weight heating work.
- Homeowner status: owners sign for a new furnace or heat pump; the owner and renter counts are above.
- Timeframe: an urgent repair in a cold month and a planned replacement are different jobs for a crew.
- ZIP code: the county table shows where gas, propane and electric homes sit, so buyers can pick ZIP codes to match.
When HVAC opens, Wyoming buyers will set these filters per campaign, down to the ZIP code, as on Summit’s other home services leads. Once HVAC opens, HVAC leads will be exclusive by default, with shared delivery on request. The sample HVAC lead shows every field.
Where buyers filter in Wyoming
Wyoming has two metropolitan areas and several micropolitan ones, so coverage there is often planned town by town. The three largest Census Bureau statistical areas in Wyoming, by July 1, 2025 estimate, are listed here. Once HVAC opens, buyers will be able to set coverage on any ZIP code, inside these areas or outside them.
- Cheyenne: 102,938 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Casper: 80,526 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
- Gillette (micropolitan area): 48,145 (July 1, 2025 estimate)

Consent records for Wyoming HVAC leads
When HVAC opens, each Wyoming HVAC lead will carry the TCPATCPAThe Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the federal law that governs telemarketing calls and texts, autodialers, prerecorded voice messages and the Do Not Call Registry. Glossary consent record captured on the form. The Wyoming entry on the state telemarketing laws page lists the state rules that apply on top of federal law, and the page for leads in Wyoming covers the state across verticals.
Wyoming HVAC lead questions
What fuel heats most owner-occupied homes in Wyoming?
Utility gas: 110,562 of 174,619 owner-occupied homes, or 63.3%, in the Census Bureau’s ACS 5-year estimates for 2020-2024 (table B25117). Electricity heats 16.8% and bottled, tank or LP gas 13.0%.
How did Wyoming’s 2025 heating degree days compare with the long-term average?
NOAA NCEI’s Climate at a Glance series shows 7,588 heating degree days for 2025, below the 1991-2020 average of 8,225 but still the 6th highest of the 48 states with a statewide series.
