How Texas homes are heated

No single fuel dominates Texas heating. The 2020-2024 ACS table B25117 counts 3,514,621 owner-occupied homes on electricity (51.1%) and 3,014,786 on utility gas (43.8%), out of 6,879,255 owner homes. Bottled, tank or LP gas heats another 258,424, and every other fuel together accounts for less than 1.5%.

Counting renters too, the all-occupied series (table B25040) (2020-2024 ACS) puts electricity at 61.2% of 10,992,816 Texas homes, because rented units lean electric. For a buyer, the split decides which crew a request needs: a gas furnace swap calls for gas piping and venting skills, while an electric home points to a heat pump or an air handler with electric heat strips. The table counts homes; it does not show where any requests come from.

Heating and cooling degree days across Texas

Cooling dominates the Texas year. The NCEI cooling degree day series shows 3,214 for 2025, up from a 1991-2020 average of 2,809, which ranks Texas third of the 48 states that have a statewide series. Only two states logged more cooling load that year.

Winters still register. The matching heating degree day series gives 1,519 for 2025, below the 1991-2020 average of 1,818, less than half the cooling figure. Heating load is lower than cooling load, but it is not zero, so heating equipment still needs service and replacement.

Method: a degree day is the gap between a day’s mean temperature and 65°F. The 2025 values are NCEI’s statewide January-December totals, and each average is the mean of the 30 annual totals from 1991 through 2020 in the same series.

Texas HVAC contractor licensing

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 8, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Texas licenses this trade at the state level through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Its air conditioning and refrigeration program page (checked October 8, 2026) says contractors who install, repair or maintain air conditioning, refrigeration or heating systems must hold a TDLR license, and each company must employ a licensed contractor at every permanent location.

  • Class A: work on any size unit, according to TDLR’s contractor application page.
  • Class B: cooling systems of 25 tons and under and heating systems of 1.5 million Btu per hour and under, a ceiling set in tons of cooling and Btu of heating per system.
  • Endorsements: each license carries one endorsement, such as environmental air conditioning for comfort cooling and heating, commercial refrigeration, or process cooling or heating.
  • Experience: 48 months of supervised work in the past 72 months, or 36 months plus 12 months holding a technician certification.

Helpers need their own credential. TDLR’s technician registration page says anyone who assists a licensed contractor with maintenance or repair must register, must work under that contractor’s supervision and may not advertise services. Refrigerant handling also requires federal certification under EPA Section 608.

Texas owners and renters behind HVAC requests

The 2020-2024 ACS table B25003 records 6,879,255 owner-occupied Texas homes and 4,113,561 renter households, out of 10,992,816 occupied units. A new condenser or furnace is normally the owner’s decision, so the owner figure is the group most replacement requests come from; tenants tend to call about repairs, which the landlord then approves.

Housing age, home values and the coastal windstorm inspection area are covered on Texas window replacement leads and are not repeated here.

Texas counties by owner-occupied homes

Ten Texas counties with the largest owner-occupied housing counts, with the share of owner homes on utility gas and on electricity, from the ACS 5-year 2020-2024 county tables B25003 and B25117. These columns describe the housing in each county and nothing about lead counts.

Hidalgo182,2715.8%89.5%ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county)

The two ends of the list sit at the state’s borders. El Paso heats 78.8% of owner homes with utility gas, the most of the ten, while Hidalgo in the Rio Grande Valley heats 89.5% with electricity and only 5.8% with gas, in the same county data (2020-2024 ACS). Most of the other eight have more gas than the statewide 43.8%.

Reading the Texas numbers for HVAC coverage

Three patterns stand out when the fuel, climate and county figures are read together:

  • Summer load is high almost everywhere. With 3,214 cooling degree days in 2025 in the NCEI series, air conditioning repair and replacement fit every Texas service area a buyer might cover.
  • Heating equipment depends on the county. Gas heats 62.2% of owner homes in Harris and 66.6% in Fort Bend, but only 37.2% in Bexar and 5.8% in Hidalgo, in the ACS county table (2020-2024 ACS). A buyer whose crews install gas furnaces and one that installs heat pumps would draw different county lists.
  • License class sets job size. A Class B contractor is capped at 25 tons of cooling under TDLR’s license classes; systems above those limits need a Class A contractor.

These patterns come from housing, climate and licensing data. They say nothing about how many leads any area produces.

What Texas HVAC buyers filter on

Texas buyers use the standard home services filters, and each one connects to a figure on this page:

  • Project type: for example install, replace or repair, for heating or cooling. The cooling degree day count points most Texas work toward air conditioning.
  • Homeowner status: the 6,879,255 owner households are the ones who sign for a new system (ACS 2020-2024, B25003).
  • Timeframe: an urgent repair during a heat wave versus a planned replacement later in the year.
  • ZIP code: lets a gas-furnace crew or a heat pump crew match the county fuel mix above.

When HVAC opens, Texas buyers will set these filters per campaign, down to the ZIP code, as on Summit’s other home services leads. Once HVAC opens, HVAC leads will be exclusive by default, with shared delivery on request. See the fields in the sample HVAC lead.

Where buyers filter in Texas

All six of the largest Texas metro areas lie entirely inside the state, from North Texas to the border cities, with populations from the Census Bureau’s July 1, 2025 estimates. Each spans many counties with different heating fuel mixes. Once HVAC opens, buyers will be able to set coverage on any ZIP code, inside these areas or outside them.

  • Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington: 8,477,157 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands: 7,904,627 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • San Antonio-New Braunfels: 2,813,140 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos: 2,620,945 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • McAllen-Edinburg-Mission: 921,549 (July 1, 2025 estimate)

Consent records for Texas HVAC leads

When HVAC opens, each Texas HVAC lead will carry the TCPATCPAThe Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the federal law that governs telemarketing calls and texts, autodialers, prerecorded voice messages and the Do Not Call Registry. Glossary consent record captured on the form. Texas adds its own telephone solicitation statute to the federal rules; the Texas entry in the state telemarketing laws table summarizes it, and leads in Texas covers the state across Summit’s other verticals.

Texas HVAC lead questions

What share of Texas owner-occupied homes heat with utility gas?

43.8%, or 3,014,786 of 6,879,255 owner-occupied homes, in the Census Bureau’s ACS 5-year estimates for 2020-2024 (table B25117). Electricity heats 51.1%, so the two fuels are close to even.

How did Texas cooling degree days in 2025 compare with the long-term average?

NOAA NCEI’s Climate at a Glance gives 3,214 cooling degree days for 2025, against a 1991-2020 average of 2,809. That placed Texas third of the 48 states with a statewide series.

What separates a Texas Class A air conditioning license from Class B?

TDLR says a Class A license covers any size unit, while Class B is limited to cooling systems of 25 tons and under and heating systems of 1.5 million Btu per hour and under. This is general information, not legal advice.

Which large Texas county relies most on electric heat?

Hidalgo County: 89.5% of its owner-occupied homes are heated by electricity and 5.8% by utility gas, the most electric of the ten counties with the most owner homes, in ACS 5-year 2020-2024 county data (table B25117).

Is it possible to limit Texas HVAC leads to selected ZIP codes?

Not yet: HVAC is now onboarding. When it opens, buyers will set filters down to the ZIP code, as on Summit’s other home services leads, and leads will be exclusive by default.
