How Louisiana homes are heated
Most Louisiana owners heat with electricity, but utility gas is a large second. In table B25117 of the 2020-2024 ACS, 713,366 of the state’s 1,216,127 owner-occupied homes, 58.7%, name electricity as the main heating fuel, the fifth-highest share among the states, and 459,115, or 37.8%, name utility gas. Propane and every other fuel together account for less than 4%.
| Heating fuel | Owner-occupied homes | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electricity | 713,366 | 58.7% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Utility gas | 459,115 | 37.8% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Bottled, tank or LP gas | 29,224 | 2.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Wood | 6,217 | 0.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| No fuel used | 5,137 | 0.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
| Fuel oil, kerosene, coal, solar and other fuels | 3,068 | 0.3% | ACS 2020-2024, B25117 |
Counting renters as well, table B25040 (2020-2024 ACS) puts electricity at 64.7% and utility gas at 32.1% of 1,804,780 occupied homes. Why an HVAC buyer looks at fuel: an electric home usually means a heat pump or an air handler with electric heat, while a gas home pairs a furnace with its air conditioner, and the two call for different replacement quotes. The split is a fact about housing, not about lead share.
Cooling and heating degree days in Louisiana
Air conditioning carries the load in Louisiana. The NCEI cooling degree day series recorded 3,003 for 2025, which is 307 above the 1991-2020 average of 2,696 and the fourth-highest 2025 total among the 48 states with a statewide series.
Heating is a short season. The matching heating degree day series shows 1,455 for 2025 against a 1991-2020 average of 1,654, which places Louisiana 46th of 48. A furnace or heat strip in a Louisiana home runs for a few months, while the cooling side of the same system runs for most of the year.
How these figures are built: each day’s mean temperature is compared with a 65°F base, the daily gaps are summed for January through December, and the 1991-2020 figure is the average of those 30 annual sums in the same statewide NCEI series.
Louisiana HVAC contractor licensing
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 8, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) lists HVAC work inside its Mechanical classification. On the board’s classification list:
- Mechanical (major classification 6, trade exam): hydraulic and pneumatic systems, with components that include heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, hydronic and steam systems, gas piping and mechanical equipment.
- Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work, and Refrigeration (subclassification 6.1, trade exam): installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, coolers and freezers.
- Threshold: for both entries the list says a license is required when the value exceeds $10,000, and the board’s Types of Licenses page names electrical, mechanical and plumbing projects above $10,000, including labor and materials (checked October 8, 2026).
- Plumbing within mechanical work: the list adds that a mechanical contractor doing plumbing work over $10,000 must hold a master plumber license from the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana (classification list, checked October 8, 2026).
A buyer that routes Louisiana requests to installers can look up a contractor’s classifications in the LSLBC contractor search. Technicians who open refrigerant circuits also need federal certification under EPA Section 608. Home improvement registration and the residential license thresholds are covered on the Louisiana window replacement page.
Louisiana owners and renters for HVAC buyers
The Census Bureau’s table B25003 counts 1,216,127 owner-occupied and 588,653 renter-occupied homes in Louisiana for 2020-2024, out of 1,804,780 occupied homes. Owners are the ones who sign for a replacement system; in a rental, the landlord usually makes that call even when the tenant reports the breakdown.
For the age of Louisiana housing, home values and the state’s energy code, see Louisiana window replacement leads.
Louisiana parishes by owner-occupied homes
Louisiana counts parishes rather than counties. The ten parishes with the most owner-occupied homes are below, with the share of owner homes heated by utility gas and by electricity, from the ACS 5-year 2020-2024 county-level tables B25003 and B25117. The table is about housing; it does not show where leads come from.
| Parish | Owner-occupied homes | Heated by utility gas | Heated by electricity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jefferson | 110,857 | 56.3% | 42.2% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| East Baton Rouge | 105,101 | 46.6% | 51.5% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| St. Tammany | 82,876 | 39.8% | 56.0% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Orleans | 79,744 | 50.3% | 48.2% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Lafayette | 66,072 | 26.0% | 72.8% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Caddo | 57,659 | 52.7% | 45.0% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Calcasieu | 56,736 | 31.6% | 65.8% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Livingston | 43,264 | 27.9% | 69.4% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Ascension | 38,597 | 41.4% | 57.7% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
| Ouachita | 37,489 | 37.0% | 59.7% | ACS 2020-2024, B25003 and B25117 (county) |
Gas outweighs electricity in three of the ten: Jefferson Parish at 56.3%, Caddo at 52.7% and Orleans at 50.3%, in the parish-level ACS data (2020-2024 ACS). Lafayette Parish is the most electric of the group at 72.8%.
Reading the Louisiana numbers for HVAC coverage
Three points come out of the official figures for a buyer deciding how to cover Louisiana:
- Cooling equipment sees the hours. With 3,003 cooling degree days against 1,455 heating degree days in 2025 in the NCEI series, air conditioning repair and replacement is the bulk of the work an installer quotes.
- Gas is a metro-parish pattern. Jefferson, Orleans and Caddo parishes have more owner homes on gas than on electricity in the ACS county data, while Lafayette, Livingston and Calcasieu lean electric. Gas furnace skills matter more in the first group.
- Licensing follows job value. The LSLBC classification list ties the HVAC subclassification to work valued over $10,000, so the size of a typical system replacement is worth checking against the license an installer holds (checked October 8, 2026).
None of this measures how many leads exist in any parish. It is a reading of Louisiana’s climate, housing and licensing data from the sources cited.
What Louisiana HVAC buyers filter on
Louisiana HVAC buyers filterFilterA rule that decides which leads a buyer is offered, based on fields such as vertical, sub-type, state, ZIP code, homeownership or accident details. Glossary on the same kinds of fields as other home services buyers. The ones that connect to the Louisiana data above:
- Project type: for example install, replace or repair, for heating or cooling. Given the cooling load, many Louisiana buyers set cooling repair and replacement first.
- Homeowner status: the 1,216,127 owner-occupied homes are where replacements get approved (ACS 2020-2024, B25003).
- Timeframe: a failed air conditioner in August is a different job from a planned spring replacement.
- ZIP code: buyers choose the ZIP codes their crews reach, for example the gas-heavy Jefferson and Orleans parish ZIP codes for furnace work.
When HVAC opens, Louisiana buyers will set these filters per campaign, down to the ZIP code, as on Summit’s other home services leads. Once HVAC opens, HVAC leads will be exclusive by default, with shared delivery on request. Every field is shown on the sample HVAC lead.
Where buyers filter in Louisiana
