Louisiana owners and households new to their homes

Louisiana has 1,216,127 owner-occupied units out of 1,804,780 occupied housing units, according to table B25003 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Renters cannot authorize new floors, so the owner count is the base that any Louisiana flooring campaign starts from.

Inside that base, table B25038 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) counts 166,654 owner households whose householder moved in during 2020 or later. A house bought in the last few years is often one where the new owner wants to replace the previous owner's carpet or tile, so buyers ask about move-in timing. The figure is a household count, not a number of quote requests.

In the 2024 release, the newest move-in groups in that table begin at 2020, and the counts cover the whole state. Buyers set the parishes and ZIP codes themselves and can receive the move-in answer with each lead.

Louisiana home values and decades of construction

Louisiana built more of its current housing in the 1970s than in any other decade: 357,108 units, in B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). The 1980s follow at 305,351 units, ahead of the 2000s and well ahead of the 1990s, when 237,061 of today's units were built.

The median value of an owner-occupied Louisiana home is $216,500 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers that match installers to a price range work from ZIP codes rather than this single statewide figure.

Louisiana contractor board rules for flooring jobs

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Louisiana measures flooring work against two dollar lines. On its types of licenses page (checked October 7, 2026), the State Licensing Board for Contractors defines home improvement as the reconstruction, alteration, renovation, repair, modernization, conversion or improvement of a preexisting residential structure where the project value is $7,500 or more. The same page requires a residential license for home improvement projects on existing residential structures exceeding $50,000.

Insurance minimums rose in 2026. The Board's memorandum of July 13, 2026 says that from August 1, 2026, home improvement applicants and licensees must maintain at least $500,000 in liability insurance or qualifying protection through an authorized liability trust fund, with proof that names the Board as certificate holder and covers all licensed scopes for at least six months (Act 757 of 2026; La. R.S. 37:2156.1).

The Board's license categories and the three-day cancellation rule for sales made at the home are described on leads in Louisiana.

How buyers narrow Louisiana flooring leads

Louisiana buyers usually combine four filters:

  • Homeowner status: confirmed owners only, because the person signing for the floor has to own it.
  • Move-in timing: whether the homeowner moved in recently, sent as a field with the lead.
  • Material and rooms: luxury vinyl plank, tile, hardwood, laminate or carpet, and the rooms involved, which sets the size of the estimate.
  • ZIP code: the ZIP codes, and so the parishes, that each installer serves.

Where buyers filter in Louisiana

Most Louisiana flooring crews work out of one of these metro areas, the six largest in the state in the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 population estimates. Buyers can choose ZIP codes in any of them, combine several, or cover parishes outside all six.

  • New Orleans-Metairie: 970,849 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Baton Rouge: 888,699 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Lafayette: 423,758 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Shreveport-Bossier City: 383,474 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Slidell-Mandeville-Covington: 279,108 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Lake Charles: 244,655 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
