Louisiana is on a recent code edition. The Department of Energy's Building Energy Codes Program page for Louisiana (checked October 7, 2026) lists the 2021 IECC with amendments as the residential code, adopted July 1, 2022 and effective July 1, 2023, with state amendments marked yes. The commercial side uses the same edition. The State Energy Office is the listed contact for code adoption.
Window buyers meet the code mainly on jobs that need a permit, such as new or enlarged openings or work done as part of a larger renovation. A buyer can ask the request form whether the job keeps the existing openings.
Louisiana parishes by climate zone
In the Department of Energy's county guide, PNNL-33270 (2021 county data), 37 Louisiana parishes fall in IECC zone 2A and 27 in zone 3A. The parishes around New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles, including Orleans, East Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Calcasieu, are in 2A, while Caddo Parish, home to Shreveport, is in 3A. DOE uses the letter A for moist climates.
ENERGY STAR draws its own lines. Louisiana crosses more than one window zone on the ENERGY STAR climate zone map (August 2025), so buyers confirm the zone for each parish or ZIP code in the official ENERGY STAR zone finder rather than using one rating for the state.
Louisiana contractor rules that reach window jobs
This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.
The State Licensing Board for Contractors sets dollar lines on its types of licenses page (checked October 7, 2026). Its home improvement category covers the reconstruction, alteration, renovation, repair, modernization or improvement of an existing residence when the project value is $7,500 or more. A residential license is required for home improvement projects on existing residential structures that exceed $50,000.
Insurance rules changed in 2026. The Board's notice of July 13, 2026 says that from August 1, 2026, home improvement applicants and licensees, along with residential construction licensees, must carry at least $500,000 in liability insurance or qualifying protection through an authorized trust fund, under Act 757 of 2026.

Louisiana home age and value
The median Louisiana housing unit dates from 1983 in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). In table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 46.3% of units were built before 1980, and the largest single decade is 1970 to 1979, with 357,108 units.
The median value of an owner-occupied home is $216,500 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers who price by home value or by window count can set filters with that figure in mind.
Filters for Louisiana window orders
- Number of windows and scope: project size decides which side of the Board's dollar lines a job falls on.
- ZIP code: the southern metro parishes sit in IECC zone 2A and Caddo Parish in 3A, so ZIP codes keep each order in one zone.
- Home age: the 1970s band is the largest, so many homes are on original or second-generation windows.
- Homeowner status: the owner is the party who contracts with the installer.
