New Jersey switched to the 2024 IECC in August 2026

New Jersey's code change is recent. The DOE Building Energy Codes Program page for New Jersey (checked October 7, 2026) lists the 2024 IECC as the current residential code, adopted July 15, 2026 and effective August 17, 2026, with state amendments.

Window jobs permitted before and after that date can fall under different editions, so buyers sometimes ask whether a homeowner has already filed for a permit or is only collecting quotes.

New Jersey registers home improvement contractor businesses through the Division of Consumer Affairs. Its HICB home page (checked October 7, 2026) defines them as persons who repair, renovate, install, replace or remodel residential or noncommercial property, and the list of covered work includes windows, doors, roofing and siding. The page notes that all HICB registrations expired on March 31, 2026 and asked registrants to renew before that date.

Climate zones across New Jersey counties

New Jersey's 21 counties fall into two moist IECC zones. In DOE's county guide, PNNL-33270 (2021 county data), 13 counties are in zone 4A and 8 are in zone 5A. Both carry DOE's A label for moist climates. Window requirements in the IECC change from one zone to the next, which is why buyers record the county for each New Jersey job.

The ENERGY STAR product map is drawn differently. The August 2025 ENERGY STAR climate zone map runs more than one window zone through New Jersey, so a buyer looks up each county or ZIP code in the ENERGY STAR zone finder rather than assuming one standard for the state.

New Jersey housing: built early, valued high

The median New Jersey housing unit was built in 1970, in table B25035 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). By table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 62.8% of units were built before 1980 and 658,007 were built in 1939 or earlier. The postwar building years are just as visible in the same table: 523,113 units date from the 1950s and 486,829 from the 1960s.

Owner-occupied homes carry a median value of $454,400 in table B25077 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024). Buyers that price by project size can ask for the window count on each lead to size the quote before the first call.

Fields New Jersey window buyers filter on

  • Number of windows and scope: the count and whether the job is a full replacement, which ties to the new code edition.
  • Home age: a prewar house and a 1990s house in the same town need different window work.
  • ZIP code: territory can follow the county zone list and a crew's travel range.
  • Homeowner status: the requester owns the property and can sign a home improvement contract.
