Hawaii license classes that cover siding and gutters

This section is general information, not legal advice. It summarizes official sources as of October 7, 2026; check the current text of each rule before relying on it.

Hawaii gives siding and gutters their own specialty classes. Exhibit A of HAR chapter 16-77 (Contractors License Board rules, DCCA copy posted February 2026) lists the classes the board assigns, and four of them mention this work:

  • C-5b siding application contractor: prepares surfaces and installs aluminum, vinyl or other manufactured siding, with the exception of wood, so that a watertight surface is obtained.
  • C-6 carpentry framing contractor: wood and metal framing, siding, wood truss and roof sheathing.
  • C-44 sheet metal contractor: fabricates and installs cornices, flashings, gutters and downspouts, and installs metal siding and roofing among other sheet metal items.
  • C-44a gutters contractor: fabricates and installs gutters and downspouts only.

The same exhibit says the remodeling and repair work of the C-5 cabinet, millwork, and carpentry remodeling and repairs contractor includes the installation of manufactured sidings and other work that does not involve changes or additions to basic components such as foundations, beams, rafters, joists or load bearing members. For a buyer, the class printed on each license shows whether a contractor client can take a wood siding job, a vinyl job, or gutters alone.

The rule that a contractor in Hawaii must hold a state license at all is described on leads in Hawaii.

Wind records for Hawaii in 2025

Hawaii's 2025 wind record is short. NOAA's Storm Events Database, 2025 details file holds 4 Hawaii records with event type Thunderstorm Wind and 3 with event type High Wind. These are the only two wind types counted here.

How the counts were made: each is the number of Hawaii records of that event type with a begin date in 2025, where a record stands for one event type in one county or forecast zone. A single storm that crosses more than one island zone can add more than one record.

Hawaii housing by building type and age

About one Hawaii housing unit in seven is in a building with 50 or more units. In table B25024 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024), 53.5% of Hawaii housing units are single-family detached and 15.0% are in buildings with 50 or more units.

A building-type question at intakeIntakeThe process a law firm or its intake team uses to screen a potential client, collect the facts of the accident and injury, and decide whether to take the case. Glossary keeps condominium and apartment requests apart from detached homes, where the owner decides on siding and gutters alone.

Age is the other dimension. Table B25034 (ACS 5-year 2020-2024) shows 50.5% of Hawaii housing units built before 1980, and table B25035 for the same period puts the median year built at 1980.

How Hawaii siding and gutter buyers set filters

Island and ZIP code come first in Hawaii, and the remaining fields follow the facts above:

  • ZIP code: a buyer can take one island, part of one, or several, by listing ZIP codes.
  • Homeowner status: the person who owns the house signs for exterior work; renters are removed.
  • Project type: siding or gutters, repair or replacement, and the siding material, so the request matches the license class of the contractor who receives it.
  • Recent storm damage: whether wind or heavy rain led to the request.

Where buyers filter in Hawaii

Hawaii's statistical areas follow its counties. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates for the three largest are below, in population order; Kauai County and every other Hawaii ZIP code can be included in a siding or gutter order the same way.

  • Urban Honolulu: 988,703 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Hilo-Kailua (micropolitan): 210,043 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
  • Kahului-Wailuku: 160,674 (July 1, 2025 estimate)
